Citizens Dedicated To Preserving Our Constitutional Republic
I have been watching the History Channel miniseries entitled "The Sons of Liberty", (http://www.history.com/shows/sons-of-liberty/about) the story of the beginnings of the colonies throwing off the yoke of British tyranny. Samuel Adams and his group of patriots banded together with other groups and began the resistance to the overbearing of King George III and his minions. General Thomas Gage took over from the previous appointed "governor" of Massachusetts, Thomas Hutchinson, after the Boston Tea Party and began a repression that became more strict and brutal than ever seen before. Gage was determined to break the spirit of the patriots in Boston by brutality but his tactics only served to strengthen the resolve of the "rebels", and drove previously disinterested parties into the arms of the Sons of Liberty. The cousin of Sam Adams, future president John Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, William Dawes, and others began to drift into the liberty movement as the tactics of Gage became ever more repressive. At the first meeting of colonial representatives John Adams set up, the first Continental Congress in Philadelphia, George Washington stood to speak against Gage, and although the first meeting really accomplished nothing Washington pledged the support of Virginia to the cause of Hancock, the Adams cousins and the people of Boston.
