Ben Carson Endorses Puerto Rican Statehood – 3 Months After Island Defaulted on Debt

Stick a fork in it.

With statehood the people of Puerto Rico would receive more financial help and benefits.

Puerto Rico defaulted on its debt in August.

The Hill reported:

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson officially backed Puerto Rican statehood in a speech on the island on Sunday.

“In a Carson administration, I will leave no stone unturned in my efforts to secure this important step in Puerto Rico’s history – establishing Estado 51,” Carson said, according to CNN.

Carson said he viewed the issue of statehood as “settled,” the news network added, referring to a referendum to join the union backed by a majority of Puerto Rican citizens in 2012.
“Mis hermanos Americanos,” Carson reportedly said, “my campaign is built around the premise of ‘We the people,’ and through such lens, I view the statehood question in Puerto Rico as settled.”

The Carson campaign estimated that 3,500 people attended the rally for the pro-statehood New Progressive Party.

AY CARAMBA! #BoycottFail Trump Delivers SNL Highest Ratings in 4 YEARS!

Open Borders Fail–

Ay Caramba! @realDonaldTrump delivers @nbcsnl HIGHEST RATINGS IN 4 YEARS! #BoycottFail!

Trump’s appearance was 47% higher than Hillary Clinton’s appearance in the season opener.
Entertainment Weekly reported:

Trump is still bringing the bump.

With Donald Trump hosting, Saturday Night Live jumped to its biggest overnight rating since 2012.

According to NBC, SNL had a whopping 6.6 household rating on Saturday night, easily beating the season’s previous high: the 41st season premiere last month, hosted by Miley Cyrus and with a guest appearance by none other than … Hillary Clinton. In fact, Trump’s overnight rating was 47 percent higher than the Miley/Hillary episode.

The previous high was held by an episode that aired Jan. 7, 2012, hosted by Charles Barkley with musical guest Kelly Clarkson.

Saturday night marked the Republican presidential hopeful’s second time hosting the iconic late-night series. He previously acted as host in 2004 when Trump was still the host of NBC’s The Apprentice.

Trump was pretty confident he’d boost SNL’s numbers. “I get the best ratings,” he reportedly said when asked about the appearance.

The Clinton Machine, Still Hiding Secret Donors

The Clintons promised that they would disclose all donations flowing into the Clinton Foundation—and everyone was supposed to assume they were doing just that. But then we discovered last Spring that there were secret foreign donors giving them money while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State.

Ben Carson’s Former Colleague Heard Stabbing

Story in 1987, Before Fame

A former colleague of Dr. Ben Carson recalled being told the story of the future presidential candidate’s botched attempt to stab a boy in 1987, before Carson’s fame carried the story to a wider audience through his autobiography and movie adaptation.

Carson under siege ahead of debate

When Ben Carson stands center stage at the Republican presidential debate on Tuesday night, his biography could be squarely in the spotlight.

Carson, the GOP presidential front-runner along with Donald Trump, has been on the offensive in the days leading up to the debate, ferociously fighting back against press reports that have sought to discredit the personal story that has been central to his rise.

Carson’s allies acknowledge that the Republican debate on Tuesday night in Milwaukee, Wis., will be a critical moment for the candidate.

“It will be an important moment and a moment where Dr. Carson will have the opportunity to stand up against a clear injustice,” said Jeff Reeter, who heads one of two major super-PACs supporting Carson’s bid. “Ben is a competitor and he’s not going to allow himself to be bullied around on this.”

Carson’s supporters view the debate as an opportunity to put to bed questions about his past in front of a huge national audience. They say they’re enthused by Carson’s reaction to the controversy, believing it has fundamentally transformed a candidate known for his preternaturally cool demeanor.

“It’s got his dander up, as my mother would say, that’s for sure,” Carson senior strategist Ed Brookover told The Hill.

At a hastily arranged press conference on Friday, Carson lashed out at the media, scolding reporters for what he called a “witch hunt” and admonishing the press for holding him to a higher standard than President Obama.

Over the weekend, Carson took that argument to cable and network news shows.

Armstrong Williams, a close friend and a surrogate for Carson, told The Hill on Monday that Carson’s campaign sought to rein in his appearances and instead send surrogates on his behalf, but that Carson insisted on defending himself on television.

“In all of my years of knowing him, I’ve never seen this fire in his belly, I’ve never seen him so upset to the point where he didn’t want others speaking for him,” said Williams, who is a contributor to The Hill. “I love it. He’s unleashed and I think it’s become a defining moment for him.”

Questions over Carson’s backstory reached fever pitch on Friday, when Politico published a story declaring that the Carson campaign had admitted to fabricating a story about him receiving “a full scholarship” offer to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Carson has since explained that the scholarship offer was unofficial, recalling that it came from a top-ranking general and West Point administrator who sought to recruit him at a private dinner when he was in high school about 50 years ago.

Carson has long said that he received the scholarship offer, but never followed through by applying to the military school because he intended to pursue a career in medicine.

Politico changed the headline and opening on their original story to note that Carson’s campaign never acknowledged fabricating the story, although some contend that Carson embellished the story by insinuating that he received a formal offer.

That controversy followed reports from several other outlets that unsuccessfully sought to corroborate life-defining stories Carson has told about his youth.

Carson’s supporters are apoplectic, arguing that the media’s inability to confirm decades-old anecdotes are not evidence that the events never took place.

The Carson campaign has since taken to posting what it believes is sufficient evidence of the past encounters on his Facebook page.

“Still waiting on the apology [from the media],” a defiant Carson wrote.

A supporting super-PAC is also getting into the game, asking for past medical patients to consider appearing in a campaign ad talking about their experiences with Carson.

The campaign believes questions surrounding the stories in question have been adequately addressed.

“Dr. Carson’s story of lifting himself out of poverty with the help of a strong mother has held up,” Brookover said. “He’ll continue to tell that story because he believes the values he’s gained in the process make him the most qualified to run the country.”

Still, the debate, which will likely draw tens of millions of viewers, could pose a critical test.

“Carson is now entering a new phase of political combat,” said U.S. Chamber of Commerce Political Strategist Scott Reed.

Donald Trump, who is seeking to keep Carson’s insurgent candidacy at bay, has signaled he intends to sink his teeth into the controversy. Over the weekend, Trump questioned whether Carson’s stabbing story could go down as described, and sought to draw attention to how Carson once described his temper as “pathological.”

Republicans say that bit by bit, the attacks could chip away at Carson’s favorability rating, which is presently the highest in the field of candidates.

“For someone whose personal story is basically their campaign, any questions around his credibility has the potential to be harmful,” said Republican strategist Reed Galen.

But in the near-term, the controversy has only served to supercharge Carson’s already-robust fundraising efforts. The campaign has been raising money off of the media reports, and claims to have hauled in $3.5 million last week alone.

“That’s big, even for us,” said Brookover.

Reeter, who is fundraising for the Carson super-PAC, says the attacks have assisted in his pursuit of the big-money donors that have so far eluded him.

It’s possible that the furor over Carson’s backstory, which has dominated political discourse in Washington over the last few days, will be passed over at the debate.

Fox Business Network seems intent on focusing on substantive policy issues and the economy in particular, after CNBC, which hosted the last debate, was widely ridiculed for the political nature of its questions and for pitting the candidates against one another.

But Carson, a political newcomer, has at times struggled on policy matters, as he did earlier in the year on a question about the debt ceiling.

“The biggest risk for him at this debate isn’t that they’ll ask about his past, it’s that they’ll ask him a detailed policy question that he doesn’t have an answer for,” Galen said. “His campaign has mostly been philosophical to this point, and I fully expect the moderators will test where he stands on specific policy issues.”

Carson’s allies insist he’s ripe for the challenge.

“The debate should be about policy and business issues, and Dr. Carson is ready to get into the substance in those areas,” said Williams. “We hope he gets vetted and tested, not only for the good of the American people, but it will confirm for us that we’re behind the guy who is a fighter and can take the right message to the American people.”
