You know - I'd really like to make learning Spanish / foreign languages a must. I wish I'd learned Spanish/Hispanic. I'm so tired of listening to groups speaking and wondering just what they are going to be doing. And these groups aren't always just tourists - some actually look like thugs. Sauk County is full of these - and at Milwaukee Value - the Government lets them know ahead of time they are coming. So out into the nearby cornfield, you'll find many men waiting for the call back. (Illegals, anyone?) This information came direct from one who worked there.
?
Exactly what are you saying Virginia..Sounds like you are saying that learning Spanish should be mandatory?
I'm thinking that might be beneficial for us. If I had understood what was being said, I might have prevented a problem. Or, I would not have been so worried. I was very concerned, because the other day, a carload of Mexicans attacked 2 older, mentally immature men as they were walking on the highway picking up cans and trash for the county. They didn't expect any problem with the car going by, Thankfully, a local couple came across the situation and called it in. I know, we really shouldn't expect that students should be mandated to take a foreign language, like Spanish, but sure would be nice to have more people around who can pick up on some of the discussions going on within a large group.
I thought English (American was our official language, but now, seeing election ballots with 2 or more languages, and drivers test and so many other written posters and signs with more that English, guess it isn't.
I just signed a petition to make English - American) our official language. Not sure how far along that is but.
Just a thought - no need to get excited.
Here is a true story ..Back in early to mid 70s, my older brother had a bar.tending job in the town of Chester NY. It was a bar on the North end of town , Near the Black dirt farms. Late one night some migrant workers were the only ones left. They were talking Spanish.. He had a suspicion something was up. He ordered them to speak English or leave. All of a sudden they jumped him. One hit my brother in the head with his mug. My brother went lights out for a brief moment. The migrants quickly emptied the cash register and ran out. A few minutes later my brother got into his car and went down the rd leading to the farming area. Sure enough he came up on the two thugs. I think they did not know it was my brother. My brother ran over one of the thugs while the other ran of across the fields. The ambulance came and picked up the thug. Many broken bones but he survived and went to jail. My brother got stitches and went home.. It just so happen that the one he ran over had the money they had stole. The people in that town all loved that my brother did what he did. Today my brother would probably be in jail. This is the sad truth of how things have eroded in our country. But I am still proud of my brother for standing up for what is right.
