I will give you a recent example
In Oregon the state government that has a super Democratic majority tried to push through its own Climate Change set of regulations and Taxes without putting it in front of voters and allowing them to approve of reject the proposal. All they needed to push it through was to simply have 6 people from the republican majority show up and they would have the quorum to push the law through.
The republicans knowing that there only way to stop it was to not show up decided to go into hiding. Without a quorum the bill was dead in the water so the Governor made a call to the state police to go arrest the missing senators and bring them to the legislature under force to allow the bill to go through.
 This set off alarms and brought several public armed militias to the defense of the senators and assisted in hiding and defending them.
That is a modern example of the second amendment in play in the modern world.
The Governor acting as a tyrant and using the state police to enforce her will was met by people from society that had legally under the law and the second amendment formed a militia in protection of the senators rights.
That's why the second amendment exists and why its going no where.
