A treatise by Don Clark;

AMERICA: THE HOLLOWED OUT NATION

I know you’ve done it.

I know you’ve felt it.

You’ve stood barefoot on the shore as the surf rushed up around your feet to a point a bit higher, then felt it rush back past your feet down to the surf again.

As the water rushed back, you’ve felt the sand being sucked from under your feet.

That’s what’s happening in America today.

Not so long ago, America was a land of strong marriages, healthy families, and solid identities.

All those things are being sucked away and hollowed out by false philosophies that say:

Males and females are interchangeable.
Males are dispensable.
Fathers are optional.
Sex is recreational.
Destroying unborn life is often optimal.
Families are disposable.
Divorce is desirable.
Genders are malleable.
A mere matter of personal choice.

Not only is America today in rebellion against nature’s God.

It is now in rebellion against nature itself.

Increasingly bizarre laws are codifying and legalizing that rebellion.

Increasingly tyrannical enforcement of those laws is forcing them upon an unwilling people.

The mandatory acceptance of philosophies that directly contradict and defy our nation’s Judeo/Christian heritage has rushed up around us all.

It is sucking away the biblical principles that have been the historic basis of this nation’s survival and success.

It has hollowed-out spaces that were once-solid places beneath our feet.

Those who once complained about having religion "shoved down their throats" now have no problem shoving all kinds of deviant doctrines down everyone's throats.

We are witnessing how weird a culture can become that turns it back on Biblical principles of living.

AN EMPTY PLACE

One of the most tragic empty spaces created by today’s culture is where strong American marriages once stood.

A Bakersfield divorce lawyer says from the time a divorce is filed in Kern County to the time it’s done now runs at least two years.

Two years of rancor, anger, acrimony, bitterness, name-calling, disrupted lives, financial stress, emotional upheaval, and spiritual darkness.

One lawyer who got out of family law says:

“Demonic forces run our divorce courts.”

Another lawyer still in family law says:

I plead with contending couples not to file for divorce.   I warn them there is NEVER a happy ending once they put the fate of their marriage in the hands of today’s legal system.  I beg them to find some other way---any other way---to come to terms over how to resolve or end their marriage.”

Men who’ve been forced by vengeful wives to go through the legal wringer agree.

They see “opposing attorneys” collude behind their backs to stretch out proceedings as long as possible to run up their “billable hours.”

They see attorneys conspire to turn what should’ve been very simple divorces that could’ve been settled in mere days into a drawn-out nightmares that go on for years.

They see courts refuse to look at documented evidence that a spouse is flagrantly lying to the court.

They see the welfare system refuse to do anything about clear proof that a spouse is openly defrauding that system.

That system seems to say:

“It’s not the system’s money.  It’s the taxpayers’ money.  So who cares if they get ripped off?”

They see so-called “impartial judges” refuse to review absolute verification of attorney malpractice.

They refuse even when expert private investigators do all their own investigative work for them.
They don’t care!

In hopeless, frustrated outrage, one husband bitterly concluded:

“The system is rigged.  Judges, lawyers, case workers, they’ve all turned the so-called ‘justice system’ into their own private money machine.”

But despite all the warnings about all these injustices, despite all the evidence of all this systemic corruptiondivorce in this city is epidemic.

And it’s getting worse.

Divorce court calendars, like toilets, are completely backed up.

Five judges now do nothing except handle divorce cases.

At least two more judges are needed to try to keep pace.

Our nation cannot survive this and be anything but an ugly place to exist.

The solution?

GEORGE:

Years ago, the University of Oregon had a counselor named George Ralph.

He was a bear of a man.

His physical presence was intimidating.

His blunt, direct, unsparing way of putting things was intimidating.

But at heart, he was a loveable and loving Teddy Bear.

George was about to be granted tenure---a lifetime position with lifetime pay.

Tenure is the golden dream of everyone in academia.

He’d earned it.  Students loved him.  Former students who’d followed his advice idolized him.

At Ralph’s age, it was a lifeline.

But he turned it down.

Why?

He once explained:

In this secular environment, I’m allowed to share a few good principles; but I’m not allowed to tell students what they really need to know if they’re going to become their best selves and live their best lives.”

So he quit and started his own practice.

Soon, a couple came to him on the brink of divorce.

They were at least willing to give their tattered marriage one last chance.

George interviewed both of them---together and separately.
He listened closely to their grievances.
He evaluated their backgrounds.
He zeroed in on their attitudes.
He figured out their personality types.

Then he called them in to tell them his conclusions and recommendations.

“Basically, you have two options.  The first is for you each to go through psychotherapy.  That will take about five years.  It will cost a lot of money.  At the end, I estimate you’ll have about a 50/50 chance of saving this marriage.”

“OR,” he said, “you can go home, read your Bibles, do what it says, and let God work miracles in your lives.”

The solutions to all our problems, personal and national, are simple:

Put God at the center.  Love Him, love each other, and love our neighbor.

With tough love.  True love.  Christ-like love.

The question is:  Are we wise enough and humble enough to do that?

In the midst of my own pain of a broken marriage, I said to myself:

Well, I’ve had ten years doing it my way.  Look where it’s got me.

Then I said:

Now I’m going to try my best to do it God’s way.  Let’s see where that gets me.”

I’m still on that journey.

But it clearly leads in far better directions than the ones I once chose for myself.
