GOP pollster’s legs ‘shaking’ after Trump focus group

Republican pollster Frank Luntz reported wobbly legs after hearing from a group of Donald Trump supporters, according to TIME.

Luntz conducted a focus group of 29 people from Washington, D.C. and its suburbs that either like or adore the GOP front-runner, paying each participant for the more than two-hour session Monday night, the magazine reported.

“I used to sleep on my front porch with the door wide open, and now everyone has deadbolts,” one man said during the session, according to TIME. “I believe the best days of the country are behind us.”

“I’m frustrated beyond belief. I feel like I’ve been lied to,” a woman said. “Nothing’s getting better.”

“We know his goal is to make America great again,” another woman said. “It’s on his hat. And we see it every time it’s on TV. Everything that he’s doing, there’s no doubt why he’s doing it: it’s to make America great again.”

After the group watched recordings of Trump's political flip flops and remarks on women, the individuals reportedly said they liked Trump even more.

“You guys understand how significant this is?” Luntz asked reporters, according to TIME. “This is real. I’m having trouble processing it. Like, my legs are shaking.”

“I want to put the Republican leadership behind this mirror and let them see. They need to wake up. They don’t realize how the grassroots have abandoned them,” Luntz continued. “Donald Trump is punishment to a Republican elite that wasn’t listening to their grassroots.”

Luntz conducted a focus group aired live on Fox News immediately following the first GOP debate early this month, finding mostly negative views of Trump – then also the front-runner.

Trump then went to Twitter to attack Luntz as "a low class slob" who "picks anti-Trump panels!"

TIME reported that most people in the room Monday night are angry about national security, including the nation's porous southern border with Mexico, and complained about the U.S. falling behind in the world.

People in the room also panned Congress. But when asked to describe Trump, they used words such as "tough," "successful," "has guts" and "kicks ass and takes names.

Leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a press conference in Dubuque, Iowa Tuesday evening.

Trump repeatedly told Ramos to sit down. Ramos continued speaking, making a statement that Trump could not deport eleven million (illegal aliens) from the U.S. Trump talked over Ramos telling him to go back to Univision.

A large Trump security man walked over to Ramos and escorted him out of the press conference as Ramos continued to talk.

Trump went on with the press conference, calling on another reporter who asked him about Trump’s latest spat with Fox News.

ABC reported Ramos was later allowed back in the room after a reporter asked Trump about him.

Ramos had an opinion article published at Univision on Monday that called Trump’s illegal immigration proposals a “horror” for illegal aliens. He mocked Trump’s vision of an America secure from illegal aliens as “Trumplandia.”

Ramo’s concluding sentence: “Trumplandia is the horror.”

UPDATE: Video, via Real Clear Politics, of Ramos and Trump debating for several minutes after Ramos was let back in to Trump’s press conference.

From the beginning of the interview Megyn Kelly went on the attack – suggesting that Trump and Cruz are unpopular with Hispanics and throwing him gotcha questions.

Megyn Kelly pushed Senator Cruz to answer how he would deport millions of illegal immigrants.
Ted Cruz wouldn’t bite.

Megyn Kelly: You’re dodging my question. Do American citizen children of two illegal immigrants… get deported under a President Cruz?

Ted Cruz: I get that’s the question you want to ask. That’s also the question every mainstream media journalist wants to ask.

Trump leaving rivals in the dust

Donald Trump’s lead over the Republican primary field is growing, with new polls putting him well ahead of his rivals in two early primary states.

The real estate magnate has opened up a 24-point lead in New Hampshire, according to a poll released Tuesday by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, with 35 percent of likely GOP primary voters supporting him.

No other Republican came anywhere near that level of support. Ohio Gov. John Kasich came the closest, polling at 11 percent.

Trump’s dominance extends to South Carolina, another crucial early primary state.

A new Monmouth University poll puts Trump at 30 percent support in South Carolina, double that of second-place finisher Ben Carson, who was the choice of 15 percent of the state’s likely Republican primary voters.

Trump scored seven times more support in South Carolina than rival Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has represented the state in Congress for more than 20 years.

Combined with polls that show him out front in Iowa, Trump now has a clear lead in the first three early-voting states in the Republican primary process — the states that typically determine who becomes the party’s nominee.

The polling released this week marks two months since the start of Trump’s meteoric rise, which has seen him overtake his rivals despite a series of controversial statements and questions about his electability in a match-up against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

While Trump is undoubtedly benefitting from the large size of Republican field, which is splitting the vote among 17 candidates, he is also siphoning away support from the candidates who were expected to be favorites for the nomination.

Gov. Scott Walker (Wis.), who in the past polled well within double digits in New Hampshire and South Carolina, is now down to just 4 percent in Monmouth’s South Carolina poll and 7 percent in PPP’s New Hampshire poll.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) has also seen his numbers dip during Trump’s rise.

Early South Carolina polling had Bush leading the state through mid-June, before Trump jumped into the race. But in Monmouth’s latest poll, Bush is down to just 9 percent support.

Struggling for traction, the GOP candidates have moved to attack Trump head-on. Bush has become especially vocal, questioning whether Trump is truly a conservative while panning his immigration plan.

“I’m a proven conservative with a record, he isn’t,” Bush said last week.

Graham on Tuesday described Trump’s rhetoric on immigration as “demagoguery” that appeals to “a dark side of politics.” He called Trump a “complete idiot” and insisted he would beat him in a one-on-one matchup in South Carolina.

“Come to South Carolina, and I’ll beat his brains out,” Graham said on CNN.

Trump fired back on Twitter, mocking Graham’s showing in the Monmouth poll.

“You just got 4 points in your home state of SC—far better than zero nationally. You’re only 26 pts behind me,” he tweeted.

The attacks from the Republican field have yet to make a dent in Trump’s support. And rather than damaging his candidacy, the attention appears to be solidifying his status as the candidate to beat.

Even a war of words between Trump and Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly — which flared again on Tuesday — has yet to thwart his momentum.

While the Republican establishment has long been skeptical of Trump’s chances, one leading GOP pollster says he’s becoming a believer.

After a two-hour focus group on Monday evening, Frank Luntz expressed disbelief at how recordings of Trump's political flip-flops and remarks on women did nothing to dissuade his supporters.

Luntz said it’s time for Republican leaders to “wake up” and realize the grassroots has “abandoned them.”

“You guys understand how significant this is?” Luntz asked reporters, according to Time. “This is real. I’m having trouble processing it. Like, my legs are shaking.”

Luntz had previously predicted the “destruction” of Trump’s candidacy after Fox News’s first debate in early August. But he now told reporters that the celebrity tycoon is here to stay, according to those who attended the focus group on Monday.

“Nothing disqualifies Trump,” he said.

Other pollsters and party strategists still question whether Trump will be able to convert the early support into votes. There is still more than four months to go until the Iowa caucuses, and how the race evolves in the fall is anyone’s guess.

But Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, told The Hill that Trump’s rise is unlike that of any candidate in recent memory.

“He’s broken every rule of the campaign consultant's manual and to no ill effect,” he said.

Biden assessing if he has 'emotional fuel' to run for president

Vice President Biden told a group of Democrats Wednesday he is figuring out whether he has the “emotional fuel” to run for president, CNN reported.

Biden, whose son Beau died from brain cancer in May, said he would have to commit his “heart” and “soul” to a presidential campaign, both of which are “pretty well banged up.”

"If I were to announce to run I have to be able to commit to all of you that I would be able to give it my whole heart and my whole soul and right now, both are pretty well banged up," Biden told Democratic National Committee members on a conference call Wednesday, according to the news network.

"We're dealing at home with ... whether or not there is the emotional fuel at this time to run," Biden added.

The call was intended to be closed to the media.

The vice president’s comments offer a rare glimpse at his decision-making process as he decides whether to challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.

A litany of factors will play into Biden’s decision, including whether he can build a campaign and fundraising infrastructure to compete with Clinton, the Democratic front-runner.

But family concerns are also weighing heavily on Biden, 72, in the wake of Beau’s death.

His oldest son reportedly urged him to run before passing away, but members of his family and inner circle are said to be divided on whether he should jump into the race while he is still mourning Beau.

When asked about his political ambitions, the vice president didn't reveal his plans. But he said he is making his decisions based on conversations with his family members.

"I'm not trying to skirt your question," he said. "That's the truth of the matter, but believe me, I've given this a lot of thought and dealing internally with the family on how we do this."

President Obama would also be put in a tough spot if Biden decides to run against Clinton, the president’s first secretary of State, for the nomination.

The White House has sought to strike a neutral pose as Biden considers a run.

“The vice president has more than earned the right to have the space and time to make a decision about whether or not he would like to be a candidate for president,” press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday.

Trump: ‘I don’t mind’ raising taxes on myself

GOP presidential front-runner and billionaire Donald Trump says he’s willing to pay more in taxes to give a break to the middle class.

“You've seen my statements, I do very well, I don't mind paying some taxes,” the businessman said on Bloomberg’s “With All Due Respect” on Wednesday.

“The middle class is getting clobbered in this country,” he added. “You know the middle class built this country, not the hedge fund guys, but I know people in hedge funds that pay almost nothing and it's ridiculous.”

Trump said he would focus on simplifying the tax code, including raising the rate that hedge fund profits are taxed at.

“I would let people making hundreds of millions of dollars-a-year pay some tax, because right now they are paying very little tax and I think it's outrageous," the billionaire business mogul said.

Elsewhere in the interview, which focused on fiscal issues, Trump said he believes it’s “worth the fight” for Republicans to battle President Obama over raising the debt ceiling, though he acknowledged it will probably be raised eventually anyway.

“Honestly, there's so much fat in Washington, that if you had the right people in there, you could cut it and there would be no problem," the GOP presidential front-runner said.

Trump also said he would lower corporate taxes in order to fight corporate inversions — a process where companies are re-incorporated in other countries to skirt American taxes.

"Let the money come in, tax it at a much lower rate, and let the money come in," he said.

"This is money that could be spent in this country, and they can't get it in.”

CNN defends debate criteria

CNN is defending its debate criteria after repeated assertions from the Carly Fiorina campaign that its methodology could bar her from the September debate’s main stage.

The network told The Hill in a statement that it remained confident in its decision to include polls from before the Fox News debate — before Fiorina’s surge in national polls.

It added that it is not allowed to change the criteria after it's been announced, even though Fox News changed its criteria for its undercard debate in August.

“Federal Election Commission guidelines make it clear that these criteria cannot be changed after they have been published,” a CNN official said.

“We believe that our approach is a fair and effective way to deal with the highest number of candidates we have ever encountered."

Fox had initially instituted a 1 percent polling floor for any candidate looking to participate in the undercard debate. But it later removed that qualification to ensure all major candidates could appear.

Jan Baran, a former Republican Natinal Committee general counsel who now works as an elections lawyer, told The Hill that the situation is murky, but that it's likely CNN would be able to change its criteria.

"CNN is correct in pointing out that the FEC regulations require 'pre-established objective criteria.' However, Ms. Fiorina may also be correct in arguing that objective criteria exist that would qualify her for the debate and that CNN should acknowledge that criteria prior to the debate itself," he said in an email.

"There is a strong legal argument that CNN can modify criteria as long as they remain objective and are established some time prior to inviting candidates to participate."

CNN published its debate criteria in May, saying it would average major polls from July 16 through Sept. 10 in order to come up with the top 10 candidates that will make it into the main debate.

That’s drawn the ire of the FIorina campaign. She regularly polled 2 percent or under in polls before the Fox debate. Although she missed the cut for the main debate, she shined in the earlier contest and has since polled at 5 percent in the two national polls after the debate.

Sarah Isgur Flores, Fiorina’s deputy campaign manager, slammed the rules in a Medium post Wednesday where she called on the RNC to step in.

“If Carly isn’t on the main stage, it will not be because her rise in the polls can’t overcome lower polling from July, but because only two of CNN’s chosen polling companies have released polls at all since the first debate,” Isgur Flores wrote.

“If the RNC won’t tell CNN to treat post-debate polling consistently with pre-debate polling, they are putting their thumb on the scale and choosing to favor candidates with higher polling for three weeks in July over candidates with measurable momentum in August and September.”

In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, the RNC said, “The RNC had great success creating a more orderly debate process but ultimately the criteria is legally left to the networks to determine. CNN’s debate parameters were released in May in order ensure there was notice and awareness of the criteria well in advance of the debate.”

“He’s talking about the fastest growing electoral bloc in the United States. He’s talking about 60 million Latinos who are going to the polls and might decide the next election. So it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t like it. There are questions that need to be answered. And the problem is he’s not used to being questioned. He doesn’t like uncomfortable questions. It happened with you. It happened with your colleagues at FOX News. He hates it when he’s being confronted. And, we have to ask those questions. I think as journalists, we have to take a stand when it comes to racism, discrimination, corruption, public lies, dictatorships, and human rights. And when he’s speaking, when he’s speaking those really dangerous words, we have to confront him. That’s our job to ask tough questions.

Today Jeb Bush defended Jorge Ramos and criticized Donald Trump for not putting up with his abusive outburst.
NBC News reported:

Jeb Bush says that Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, who was escorted out of a press conference held by Donald Trump on Tuesday night, should have been “treated with a little more respect.”

“I think people with the press ought to be treated with a little more respect and dignity,” he told reporters.

Ramos was removed from the press conference after Trump accused him of interrupting another reporter to ask a question about immigration policy. Ramos was later allowed back into the room.

Bush’s comments came after a town hall event in Pensacola, Florida, where Bush continued to blast Trump’s immigration proposals as “not conservative” and said the real estate mogul should be held to the same standards as other Republican candidates.

“This guy is now the frontrunner,” he said. “He should be held to account, just like me.”

“Go through these questions and what you’ll find is this guy doesn’t have a plan,” he added. “He’s appealing to people’s angst and their anger. I want to solve problems so that we can fix this and turn immigration into what it’s always been: an economic driver for our country.”
