Trump: Russia will have to take care of ISIS

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump says Russia will have to deal with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) sooner or later because the threat posed by the radical Islamic group is closer to its border.

 

Trump took fire from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) Sunday for saying that Russia would take care of ISIS, but he doubled down in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

“They don’t want ISIS going into Russia either. So they’re not bombing them yet,” he said.

U.S. officials say Russian airstrikes have targeted U.S.-backed rebels, but Trump said it's only a matter of time before Russia's powerful military begins to focus on ISIS for fear it could sponsor terrorism in Moscow.

Trump said the United States should stay out of Syria and let the violent conflict shake out on its own.

“This does not sound like me very much, but I want to sit back and I want to see what happens,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Trump rebuffed calls by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and GOP presidential candidate John Kasich for the United States to establish a no-fly zone over Syria to respond to Russian airstrikes against U.S.-backed rebels.

He also predicted Syria would become a quagmire for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“It’s not going to be great for them if you want to know the truth,” he said, citing the costly intervention in Afghanistan that contributed to the breakup of the Soviet Union.

“I mean they essentially went bankrupt. It destroyed the Soviet Union,” he said of the Afghanistan war. “Now they’re going into Syria, there are so many traps, there are so many problems.

“When I heard they were going in to fight ISIS, I said, ‘Great, let them,’” he said.

Trump said President Obama’s decision to back rebels in Syria is risky.

“I spoke to a general who's very you know much, he said, 'Mr. Trump, we have no idea who these people are.' They may be worse than Assad,” he said.

Trump: Gun violence will happen 'no matter what you do'

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday morning that the U.S. cities with the strongest gun laws often have the biggest problems, saying gun violence will happen "no matter what you do.”

 

“You take Chicago, you take Baltimore, you take various other places where you have tremendous gun violence and death,” Trump said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The strictest laws in the United States-- in the world-- for guns happens to be Chicago where they have a lot of problems. Baltimore, a lot of the places where you have the biggest problem is where they have the strongest laws.”

“I don't think it's about laws,” Trump said during a gun control discussion in the wake of a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore. that left nine people dead.

“The strongest, the most stringent laws are in almost every case the worse places. It doesn't seem to work. It's a tough situation,” Trump added. “And when it comes to the schools, it really is mental health. It's a mental problem.”

. Trump said he watched President Obama’s statement following the Umpqua Community College rampage and said he understands “exactly what he's saying.”

“But, you know, no matter what you do, guns, no guns, it doesn't matter. You have people that are mentally ill. And they're gonna come through the cracks. And they're going to do things that people will not even believe are possible.”

Trump also criticized the gun-free zone on the Umpqua Community College campus.

“I see it was a gun-free zone. And you were not allowed to have guns at all in that particular area. And you could make the case that it woulda been a lot better had people had guns because they had something to fire back.”

The real-estate mogul advised the media to stop reporting the name of the assailant in mass shootings to prevent “copycat” killers.

“But in the meantime, the news is all using his name,” Trump said. “And everybody now knows his name. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you wouldn’t cover it? Because I think that’s part of the problem. You have copycats. They wanna do it. They think it’s wonderful. They’re sick people.”

Christie: I’d rather jump off a bridge than serve in Congress

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he would rather jump off the Brooklyn Bridge than serve in the House of Representatives, which has been racked with turmoil between GOP leaders and Tea-Party conservatives.

 

Christie quipped that Republicans should invite him to Congress to help them move their agenda. But when ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked him if he wanted to serve as Speaker, Christie quickly declined.

“I would rather jump off the Brooklyn Bridge than be in Congress,” he said.

Christie had been touting his ability keep Republicans unified.

“I've not only gotten things done like pension reform and tenure reform that people said could never get done, but also I've vetoed more than 400 bills. And every one of those vetoes has been sustained. That shows I can keep the Republican Party together,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

He trumpeted his record of vetoing more tax increases than any governor in American history and pledged to bring straight-forward leadership to the White House

“What people want in Washington is someone who knows how to do two things at once: stand up and say this is where I am, who I am, to say what I mean and mean what I say. And then also to be able to get people in a room and say, OK, now that we've set that out, let's get something done,” he said.

Christie is polling at 2.6 percent nationwide, putting him in 9th place according to an average of polls compiled by Real Clear Politics.
