Trump: Teachers with guns could have prevented Oregon shooting

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump said armed teachers could have protected the students who were killed in a mass shooting at a community college in Oregon this week.

“This is in light of what’s gone on in Oregon,” Trump said Saturday during a campaign stop in Franklin, Tenn., after talking about his Second Amendment stance.

“And by the way, it was a gun-free zone,” he said of the Umpqua Community College shooting Thursday.

“I’ll tell you, if you had a couple of the teachers or someone with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off,” he added.

Chris Harper Mercer, 26, killed nine people and injured seven more before killing himself as police approached, law enforcement officials said Saturday.

The killer, reportedly a gun collector who often went to a shooting range, was armed with three pistols and a semiautomatic rifle.

The shooting has drawn another round of calls for background checks from gun control advocates.

But Trump was quick to say he would “defend the rights of law-abiding gun owners.”

“They have background checks already in place,” the businessman added. “That was in in 1998. People slipped through, and our government’s not doing a great job.”

Trump also turned his attention toward Syrian refugees, who he has previously threatened to “send back” if he is elected president.

During his speech Saturday, Trump warned of “young, strong people” among Syrian refugees that could turn out to be affiliated with ISIS.

He made repeated references to a “Trojan horse,” echoing comments he made earlier Saturday during an interview with FOX News.

“This could be like a Trojan horse,” he said on Fox. “Two-hundred-thousand people coming into the United States and they come in here and we’re totally unprepared.”

Trump closed his remarks with a look ahead toward the holiday season.

"You can’t use Christmas anymore,” Trump told the crowd. "I will tell you one thing. If I win, you’re going to be using Merry Christmas all the time, all the time.”

This is exactly what Obama wants to happen.

I'm with Donald! Arm the teachers!

I am with him as well, arming teachers would stop the school shootings.

As Biden looms, key union backs off on endorsing Hillary

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton seems to have lost a major union endorsement.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is backing off of its earlier plans to support the Clinton campaign, according to a New York Times report that cites a anonymous source within the union.

The fire fighters have lost faith in Clinton, and some are supportive of Vice President Joe Biden — who may still enter the Democratic race for 2016 — so top officials feared such an endorsement could have divided the union’s members, the source told the Times. The issue came up during the during a board meeting in September.

“Secretary Clinton doesn’t sell well here,” Roy L. McGhee III, a union board member, told the Times. “I think the Republican attack machine, the media machine, has made sure of that. The vice president will do better. He’s popular among firefighters."

According to the source, IAFF general president Harold Schaitberger informed Clinton’s campaign of the decision to back away from its endorsement earlier in the week.

Two larger unions — the Service Employees International Union and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees — are hesitating to endorse a Democratic candidate during the primaries and may wait until the general election to get involved.

Carson: Pro-Islam nonprofit broke the law with political attack

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says a nonprofit Islamic advocacy group broke the law by calling for him to drop out of the presidential race.

“The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a public press conference demanding that I withdraw from the presidential race,” Carson said in an email to supporters Saturday.

“Here’s the catch – CAIR is a tax-exempt nonprofit, and the IRS rules explicitly prohibit such groups from intervening in political campaigns on behalf of – or in opposition to – a candidate,” the email continues.

Carson said he is demanding the IRS take action against the group and started an online petition to remove CAIR’s tax-exempt status.

A spokesman for CAIR called for Carson to drop out of the presidential race after the GOP candidate said a Muslim should not be elected president.

CAIR is a 501(c)(3) group with tax-exempt status, according to the group’s website.

The group previously lost its tax-exempt status in 2011 for not filing tax returns for three years in a row, but regained it the next year.

“We find it interesting that Dr. Carson seeks to use a federal government agency to silence his critics and wonder if that tactic would be used to suppress First Amendment freedoms should he become president,” CAIR said in response to Carson.

“CAIR is not in violation of any IRS regulation in that we did not ‘participate in’ or ‘intervene in’ any political campaign. We, as mandated by our mission as a civil rights organization, merely expressed the opinion of our community that a candidate whose views violate Article VI of the Constitution is unfit for public office.”

CAIR says its mission is to “enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.”

Critics claim the group has ties to terrorism, after the nonprofit was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a 2007 trial of the Holy Land Foundation, which was convicted of supporting the terrorist group Hamas in 2009.

Representatives from CAIR did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Carson said he is demanding the IRS take action against the group and started an online petition to remove CAIR’s tax-exempt status.

Good for Ben but I doubt Obama will let that happen to his beloved CAIR!
