A new I-9 Form was scheduled to take effect on Monday, but in a surprise move, Secretary Janet Napolitano the new Secretary of Homeland Security retracted the mandatory changes late on Friday, pending further comment and review; businesses that had discarded the previous I-9s must now resume using them until April 3rd

Beginning Monday, February 2, 2009, all U.S. businesses were scheduled to update their Employment Verification practices to incorporate new standards for documentation and newly updated I-9 Forms. However, late in the day on Friday, January 30, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended another 30-day comment period for the new rules and pushed back the scheduled update by two months, instructing businesses to resume their use of the previous guidelines and I-9 Forms.

"This is calculated to prevent employers from verifying a potential employee's citizenship or immigration status. For too long employers are allowed to hire illegal aliens without much government oversight," said conservative activist Mike Baker.
