SICK! New Planned Parenthood Video Features Advisor Saying “EVERYTHING WE PROVIDE IS FRESH”

This may be one of the worst Planned Parenthood videos so far. An official laughs and sips her drink as she talks about eyes, hearts, spinal cords and gonads. She also says everything they provide is “fresh” as if she was talking about pieces of meat.

“We’ve just been working with people who want particular tissues, like, you know, they want cardiac, or they want eyes, or they want neural,” says Dr. Westhoff to a prospective fetal organ buyer. “Certainly, everything we provide–oh, gonads! Oh my God, gonads. Everything we provide is fresh.” Westhoff continues, “Obviously, we would have the potential for a huge P.R. issue in doing this,” before offering to introduce the buyers to “national office abortion people” from Planned Parenthood.

If you made this up, no one would believe you. It’s like something out of a horror movie.

Fiorina: 'Shame on us' if Congress funds Planned Parenthood

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina delivered an impassioned attack against Planned Parenthood on Wednesday, comparing the women’s health provider to the dangers of Iran.

“I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama to watch these tapes,” she said of the 10 undercover videos that have been released by an anti-abortion group this summer.

 

“Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. This is about the character of our nation, and if we will not stand up and force President Obama to veto this bill, shame on this,” she said to roaring applause at CNN's Republican presidential debate in Simi Valley, Calif.

Fiorinia, the only woman on the stage, urged viewers to watch the footage that has been released. Several prominent Democrats, including President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), have said they have not watched the videos.

Three Republicans Opposed House Vote To Defund Planned Parenthood

The House voted to defund Planned Parenthood Friday with the support of two Democrats and all but three Republicans.

The (241-187) vote is an effectively symbolic response to a series of videos released by The Center for Medical Progress in which top Planned Parenthood doctors and officials discuss how and at what cost some of their clinics harvest and distribute aborted fetuses.

Republican Reps. Robert Dold, Charlie Dent and Richard Hanna sided with Democrats against the bill, which would defund Planned Parenthood for a year. Every other Republican representative present, along with Democratic Reps. Dan Lipinski and Collin Peterson voted in favor of the defunding bill.

In a follow up vote, the House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (248-177), which would punish doctors who do not try to save babies born alive in botched abortion procedures. Every Republican voting and five Democrats supported that bill.

House votes to freeze federal funding for Planned Parenthood

The House on Friday voted along party lines to freeze federal funding for Planned Parenthood after weeks of escalating tension surrounding its use of fetal tissue.

In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood's federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider.

Lawmakers also passed a bill tightening restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections in a 248-177 vote.

“What we’ve learned about Planned Parenthood is appalling, barbaric and indefensible,” Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Pa.) said. 

Three Republicans broke ranks to vote against the funding freeze: Reps. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), Robert Dold (R-Ill.) and Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.). The Democrats voting to defund were Reps. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) and Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), who are both opposed to abortion rights.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) voted "present," objecting that the measure would allow Planned Parenthood to perform abortion in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk.

An official with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund ripped the vote as a “callous attempt to insert politics into women’s heath."

“Millions of Americans rely on Planned Parenthood for birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and other critical preventive care, and nothing that politicians in Congress did today will change the fact that our doors remain open to everyone, in every part of this country, who needs high-quality, compassionate reproductive health care,” said Eric Ferrero, the action fund’s vice president of communications.

The House vote represents the first time that congressional Republicans have approved legislation to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of this summer’s undercover video controversy. The vote is largely symbolic, as Democrats are expected to block the bill in the Senate.

Cutting off Planned Parenthood’s federal funding would result in a net savings of $235 million over a decade, according to a report this week by the Congressional Budget Office. It would also cut off access for as many as 600,000 patients, resulting in “several thousand” unplanned births.

House GOP leaders hope the legislation will help avert a government shutdown by appeasing the dozens of conservatives who have pledged to defund Planned Parenthood at all costs. Lawmakers have five legislative days left to pass a spending bill and stop the shutdown that GOP leadership is aggressively working to avoid.

The vote is unlikely to placate conservatives, however. Thirty-one members are still vowing not to vote for any spending bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), that includes Planned Parenthood funds.

King said Friday's action "is not a sufficient vote to defund Planned Parenthood."

"I expect much stronger language than this in the CR coming up in the next few weeks," King said. "Innocent, unborn babies deserve more than just a show vote.”

Conservative Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) has said standalone defunding votes, even with the fast-track process of reconciliation to get through the Senate, are not good enough.

“Unless it's tied to must-pass legislation, there's no chance of success,” he said. “Everybody knows that.”

Democrats are seizing on the growing risk of a second GOP-led shutdown in two years. A half dozen House Democrats took to the floor Friday blasting the abortion bills.

“The Republicans just want to shut the government down if we don’t fund Planned Parenthood. That’s what they’re all about,” said Rep. Frank Pallone, the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

GOP supporters of the bill sought to distance it from the politically toxic topic of a shutdown. “We are not on a bill about a government shutdown,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) said as she managed the floor debate.

“Most people think that this is common sense. If there is reason to investigate, then there is reason to withhold taxpayer dollars during that period of time,” Blackburn said. “There is bipartisan opposition from men and women to this practice.”

Republicans spoke at length about allegations that Planned Parenthood has been “harvesting” fetal organs on the floor, while Democrats sought to rebut them.

“No wrongdoing was shown. There’s no criminal charges, there’s no charges at all, pending against Planned Parenthood,” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Col.) said.

Minutes later, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Calif.), accused a Republican colleague of making “a complete falsehood” on the floor.

“Planned Parenthood does not sell any body parts for profit. That is a fact,” she said.

The bills passed after several hours of emotional floor speeches that included graphic descriptions of botched abortions and comparisons to the convicted abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell.

“I am getting emotional here because it is an emotional issue for me,” said. Rep Phil Roe (R-Tenn.), who said he delivered more than 3,000 babies in his 30 years as an obstetrician.

Republicans also highlighted the veto threats by the Obama administration, which has condemned the efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. Federal officials have said Obama would veto an expansion of the born-alive protection bill.

“When you saw the president come out yesterday and say he would veto this bill, how extreme can someone be?” House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said. “This should be a place where we can all come together.”

Democrats said the proposed changes to the born-alive protection bill are overly broad, and intended to intimidate abortion providers out of practice.

“It is already illegal to fail to provide care to an infant born alive,” Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif) said. “What this bill does is to vilify abortion providers.”

Senate GOP starts fast-track on bill to block Planned Parenthood funding

Senate Republicans on Monday night started the Senate's fast-track process on legislation that would block federal funding for Planned Parenthood. 

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) began the process, known as Rule 14, that will allow the legislation to skip over the Senate's committee process and go straight to the Senate floor where it can be brought up for a vote. The Senate will likely complete the process on Tuesday.

The legislation, which passed the House last week by a 241-187 vote, would place a one-year freeze on federal funding for the organization giving lawmakers more time to investigate claims of wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood made in a string of controversial videos.

 

Senate Republicans also started the fast-track process on a House-passed bill that would tighten restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections.

 

The proposals come as Republican leadership is under pressure to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood ahead of an end-of-the-month deadline to pass a government spending bill. 

 

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has pledged to not let the government shutdown, and called his party's push to defund Planned Parenthood as part of a spending bill an "exercise in futility." 

 

But Congress' path to keeping the government open remains unclear with only a handful of days left before the deadline. 

 

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the Senate's No. 2 Republican, told reporters that the Senate could take the lead on a funding bill, but added that "I don't think it's been finally decided."

Democrats block 20-week abortion ban

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a Republican bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. 

The measure failed to advance in a 54-42 vote, falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed.

 

Democratic Sens. Robert Casey, Jr. (Pa.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.), who all oppose abortion rights, joined Republicans in voting to advance the bill. Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Mark Kirk (Ill.), who support abortion rights, voted against it.

The vote comes amid a roiling debate over Planned Parenthood funding that could lead to a government shutdown on Oct. 1. 

Republican leaders are hoping the vote on the 20-week abortion ban, which comes the same day that Pope Francis arrives in Washington, will help give members a chance to register their anti-abortion views without running the risk of a government shutdown.

The measure would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy except in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk. The ban after 20 weeks is based on the idea that a fetus can feel pain at that point in its development, something that remains a matter of fierce debate.

Republicans also pointed out that only seven countries in the world allow abortions after 20 weeks.

“It’s legislation that would allow America to join the ranks of most civilized nations when it comes to protecting the most innocent and vulnerable of life,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the Senate floor.  

Opposing the bill, Planned Parenthood argued that abortions after 20 weeks are extremely rare, but are sometimes necessary for medical reasons, like if the baby has a lethal disease that would cause them to die shortly after birth.

“Passing this law would put women in unimaginable situations — needing to end a pregnancy for serious medical reasons, but unable to do so,” said Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens.   

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), meanwhile, accused McConnell of “pandering to the extremists in his party” while the clock ticks toward a shutdown.  

“Instead of coming to grips with the reality of the situation, and working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown, the Republicans seem more interested in political theater,” Reid said.

The 20-week bill has already passed the House.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) assailed Senate Democrats for blocking the bill, calling their stance “indefensible.”

“Science and medical research has shown that by 20 weeks in the womb — five months of pregnancy — unborn babies are capable of feeling pain. It is morally wrong to inflict pain on an innocent human being, but that’s exactly what Senate Democrats and President Obama are supporting by opposing this humane bill,” Boehner said in a statement.

If the ban were ever signed into law, it would almost certainly face a court challenge. Federal courts have in the past struck down some state 20-week laws as violating Supreme Court precedent protecting abortions up to the point of viability, generally considered to be around 24 weeks. Some state bans remain in place.

As for the way forward to avert a shutdown, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) has indicated that the Senate will later vote on a spending bill that defunds Planned Parenthood.  

That measure would certainly be blocked by Senate Democrats, after which the Senate would move to vote on a “clean” continuing resolution that does not defund the organization.

No plans are finalized, however, and it remains unclear if House Republicans will accept a “clean” funding bill.
