NRA-Backed Campus Personal Protection Act
Passes House Committee,
Senate Companion Bill to be Heard in Senate Committee Next Week!
This week, the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety listened to five and a half hours of testimony for and against House Bill 750 authored by state Representative Joe Driver (R-Garland), as well as three other related measures. This NRA-backed legislation would allow Texas Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves on the campuses on public colleges and universities. The committee voted 5 to 3 to advance HB 750 to the House Calendars Committee, which will decide if and when the bill is considered by the full House.
Please call and e-mail members of the Calendars committee and urge them to set HB 750 for a vote by the Texas House of Representatives as soon as possible. Contact information can be found here.
On Tuesday, March 22, the Senate Criminal Justice Committee will consider Senate Bill 354, the Senate companion bill to HB 750 sponsored by state Senator Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio), at 1:30 p.m. or upon adjournment in Room E1.016 of the Capitol Extension. Anti-gun student groups, faculty and school administration are lobbying aggressively against this bill, so committee members need to hear from you! Contact information for committee members can be found here. Please be polite and concise with your comments in support of the legislation - most committee members supported this bill last session or have co-authored it this session.
Because the capitol is located so close to the University of Texas at Austin, we expect the opposition to bring a large number of witnesses to speak against the bill. We are looking for students (particularly veterans returning home from Afghanistan or Iraq who are beginning or resuming their studies, graduate or law school students), faculty, staff or employees of public institutions of higher education, to testify in favor of SB 354. If you fall into one of these categories and can come to Austin on Tuesday, please contact Tara Mica, NRA-ILA State Liaison, at tmica@nrahq.org or Alice Tripp with the Texas State Rifle Association at agtripp@aol.com over the weekend.
