The End of the Revolution and the Beginning of Independence

For many years, I was sure that I understood what lead to the War of Independence. Though time, and additional study, was constantly 'enhancing' that knowledge, I was sure that I had it 'pegged'. Perhaps only missing some minor details.

Some of those details, that had alluded me for many years, had to do with instances that occurred, from time to time, and might be referred to, without great detail, in other works -- that held the same basic premise of the cause, events, etc., that led to that war.

One of these is what was referred to as the Powder Alarm. In numerous readings, I ran across references to "thousands of men, under arms, marching toward Boston" I failed, however, to find the details, so, I simply left that thought out of the equation.

Another instance was the one that occurred at Fort William and Mary, where weapons were seized from the British. However, I never found a detailed account, and wondered if it had anything to do with the capture of Fort Ticonderoga.

Poetically, it is far more interesting to think, "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", but that leaves little for the more accurate song of the time, "The World Turned Upside Down", which more closely approximates the events that led to the eventual and inevitable War for Independence.

I think that if you will take the time to read this article, you will be astounded by what you will learn. You will also have to rethink what you know, and add to that knowledge that which you have, previously, been denied.

You will also, probably, wonder why this information has not been a part of the curriculum, in history classes, because it is such a significant part of the story, it does warrant inclusion and consideration, with regard to just where we came from.
