Citizens Dedicated To Preserving Our Constitutional Republic
Source Quora.com;
Gursewak Singh, of India, wants to know:
“Why is the US not strictly taking steps to reduce guns from its citizens?”
When we were still a British Colony the Crown decided they didn’t want us armed anymore and sent troops to the towns of Lexington and Concord to confiscate the arms held there (firearms, cannon, powder) from the law abiding folks (they were legal to own at the time, with Crown allowance).
These law abiding folks didn’t take too well to that concept and so they fought back, forcing the British Regulars to retreat.
This lead to the Declaration of Independence the next year and then open warfare that lead to the creation of the United States of America.
After these actions the founding fathers, understanding that tyrants can come to power, enshrined the PROTECTION OF THE NATURAL RIGHT to self protection. No, our Constitution does not GRANT our right to keep and bear arms (or to be secure in our persons and papers) rather it PROTECTS those rights from government intrusion.
In this country, we enjoy shooting sports such as hunting, target/skeet/trap shooting, 3-gun competitions, cowboy shooting, all kinds of things involving firearms.
With this comes the risk that folks will use their protected rights for evil intent.
And as opposed to the small minded world where the many are punished for the misdeeds of the few or the one we say “up yours bucko” at punishing the 100,000,000 law abiding for the 400 (or so) law breaking who use rifles (of any kind) in the commission of homicides [per the FBI (if you can trust them) this is a smaller number than those killed with knives, or with bats/clubs/hammers, or with hands/fists/feet].
Further, those protections enshrined in the constitution and bill of rights are not (supposedly, though some states try) up for a simple vote but rather are supposed to be protected by the Amendment process whereby 2/3 of each House of Congress and 3/4 of the several states must approve changes.
If you like how your country is operated then bully for you. If you want to tell me how to run my country then expect quite a bit of push-back, and with that why don’t you go do something about crap like this: India’s caste system is alive and kicking – and maiming and killing...
