The Houston Chronicle this week reported that federal courts in Texas were dismissing hundreds of deportation cases. Dismissals of such cases were up 700 percent between July and August of this year, according to The Chronicle, and were the result of unsolicited motions by federal prosecutors, not the defendants. OneAmerica Votes, an organization that aims to increase immigrant voter turnout, is actively recruiting illegal aliens to campaign for Democratic incumbent Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). The organization’s director, Pramila Jayapal, says the campaign is about empowering those who may not feel like they can contribute to a campaign because they can't vote. At the direction of Governor Paterson, the State of New York is currently reviewing hundreds of pardon applications from criminal aliens who want to avoid deportations based on their criminal acts. Governor Paterson announced in May of this year that he intended to pardon certain criminal aliens in order to prevent the U.S. government from deporting them. In a desperate push to keep the Senate in friendly hands, Barack Obama took to the airwaves of Univision Radio on Monday and encouraged Hispanic voters to join him in his plan to “punish our enemies.” It appears Hispanics have sunk to the challenge. Among the most motivated members of Obama’s nightmare coalition are those who have no right to play any role in the American political process, or even to be in this country, generously financed by Democrats and their political allies.

Last Thursday, Obama campaigned for Democratic Senator Patty Murray in Seattle, and across Oregon, delivering a speech noted for its fear mongering. The Associated Press reported Friday that “dozens” of illegal immigrants are crisscrossing Seattle to campaign for Democratic U.S. Senator Patty Murray. Dozens is putting it modestly. All told, “About 150 volunteers rolled out in nine cities across Washington this past week, knocking on 3,000 doors.” AP credits the pro-illegal immigration organization OneAmerica Votes with launching “one of the largest get-out-the-vote campaigns in the state on behalf of Democratic candidates.”

In its grand tradition of missing the forest for the trees, the dinosaur media have focused on individual foot soldiers like Maria Gianni, one of the illegals in the Seattle GOTV drive. Gianni told reporters she feared being asked about her immigration status and being deported, “But if there’s a change, I would feel like I contributed, even in a small part, to a change we all need.” In some quarters, Gianni is being hailed as a fearless hero braving arrest for her beliefs – although Seattle is a sanctuary city that provides free health care to illegal aliens. She and other illegals need not fear that the law will halt their interference in another country’s political process.

The immigration policy debate in the United States is often described as “controversial.” In fact, it is hardly controversial at all. There are few issues on which there is greater consensus among American voters. The latest poll to affirm widespread support for immigration enforcement and opposition to amnesty was conducted by Quinnipiac University in early September.The poll of 1,905 voters found that by a 68% to 24% margin, Americans favor stricter enforcement of immigration laws over granting amnesty to illegal aliens. The poll also showed that a plurality of Americans support ending the practice of automatic birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens. The Quinnipiac poll also found that the public overwhelmingly disapproves of the way President Obama is handling immigration policy by a 60% to 28% margin.FAIR maintains an extensive database of polling information. These polls, conducted by numerous reputable polling organizations, are an important resource for members and activists to refute efforts by amnesty and open borders advocates to portray true immigration reform as controversial.
