Americans showing their support for SB1070 with their wallets

Between Tuesday and Thursday, $330,000 in donations poured into the legal defense fund set up by Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ), to help defend her state against the lawsuits being filed, not only by the federal government, but by illegal immigration advocacy groups as well.

Of course, on Tuesday, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals against the state of Arizona, alleging that SB1070 violates federal immigration law. The feds are also seeking an injunction to prevent the law from taking effect, as scheduled on July 29.

By Thursday, the fund which was started on May 26, had received a total of $500,000. The small donations, between $5 and $2,000, have come in from all over the country.

The Associated Press recently reported that one contributor, Mary Ann Rohde from Rialto, California, said: “Arizona needs our help. It's a disgrace what our government is doing.” She and her husband sent in $20.

Because Arizona’s Attorney General, Terry Goddard, a Democratic hopeful for governor, opposes the law , SB1070 is being defended by private lawyers. With attorney fees estimated at $450 an hour, donations are needed to defend the crackdown on illegal immigration.

With broad support for Arizona’s new immigration law, a recent Fox News polls shows that 65 percent of Americans want a similar law passed in their own state.

Contrary to what those who oppse the law often cite as reasons for our ‘broken immigratio system’(i.e. process takes too long, the need for foreign workers here, etc.), a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 75 percent of Americans blame the lack of border enforcement by the federal government for the surge in illegal immigration. That same poll showed that 83 percent of Americans want the military placed on the border.

In these tough economic times, when Americans’ dollars are being stretched as never before, it speaks volumes that so many people are willing to give a portion of their money to defend Arizona, against not only the dangers of illegal immigration, but against the federal government as well.

With his lawsuit, President Obama may have further galvanized a nation, already angry over what many see as his disdain for the rule of law, and his endless call for amnesty.
