It is imperative that we remember that the founding fathers intended the Constitution to be a guarantee of God given rights. They did not for one moment suppose that the Constitution itself gave rights.
Let's have a short conversation about abortion, gay marriage, pornography, etc.
Mrs. Jones, if I understand correctly then you are concerned that you might lose your right to an abortion if my candidate is elected?
Yes.
Then, Mrs. Jones, would I be correct in assuming that you are concerned about losing that right because if my candidate is elected s/he would be able to appoint conservative Supreme Court judges who would be willing to overturn Roe v Wade?
Yes.
So, Mrs, Jones, you admit that it is the judges and not the Constitution itself that guarantees you the right to an abortion (gay marriage, porn, etc)?
Yes.
So, Mrs. Jones, your own personal views aside, would you agree that the evidence is overwhelming that the founding fathers considered the Constitution to be an enumeration of what they saw as God given rights?
Yes.
So, Mrs. Jones, you admit then that the founding fathers never once said that God gave people the right to abortion?
Yes. Your logic is sound but your logic leads one to believe that God gave people the right to have slaves.
Mrs. Jones, that conclusion is not justified as follows: there are four categories of rights:
1) God given rights listed in the Constitution
2) Man given rights listed in the Constitution
3) God given rights not listed in the Constitution (overlooked)
4) Man given rights not listed in the Constitution
Slavery clearly is in the second category and we fixed that in 1865 with the 13th Amendment.
Let us briefly look at the third and fourth categories. I think we can agree that the fourth is not worth considering in a discussion about God given rights?
Yes.
Then for number three, I suggest that we can see that the founding fathers, who were very concerned about guaranteeing every possible freedom, would have listed every God given freedom they could think of?
No, they missed abortion (porn, gay marriage).
So, Mrs. Jones, you believe that the founding fathers believed that God did not mind if babies were killed but they forgot to put that in the Constitution. (or degrading porn or dangerous gay marriage was ok). Then you will have to take that up with God but I believe that He was against all three and I will continue to support candidates and legislation to that end. Good day, Mrs. Jones
