Exodus 18 – Jethro Visits Moses

Jethro proposed choosing judges on the basis of four important characteristics:

A. Ability (Capable Men) – First they were to be “capable men,” able to hear cases impartially and to render wise judgment. Ability comes first, not because other qualifications are unimportant – all are important. Because this is a choice of judges, the ability to judge rightly heads the list.
B. Piety (Men Who Fear God) – Piety is also important, since those who judge in dispute between people must, “fear God.” Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” Those who preside over the affairs of other human beings must have wisdom. Respect and a proper awe before God will have two benefits in reference to other people. First, it will provide respect for them, since they are made in, “the image of God,” as we are (Genesis 1:26-27), and are created for eternal fellowship with Him. Second, it will enable us to place human demands, needs and cases in proper perspective since ultimately we all are accountable to God for what we do.
C. Reliability (Trustworthy Men) – It is possible to have a great deal of ability and even a measure of true piety and yet not be dependable to do what we have promised or what is necessary. Some people have to be reminded to keep working or to tackle the difficult problems. Leaders should be self-starters who can also persist until a job is finished. In other words, they must be trustworthy.
D. Integrity (Men Who Hate Dishonest Gain) – Integrity, the last qualification, is particularly important for those who would be judges. Jethro expressed it as, “men who hate dishonest gain.” Integrity is also something for which every follower of Jesus Christ should be known. In today’s courts, lack of integrity is sometimes a problem, too, as shown by exposés of judges or lawyers who take bribes. Jesus also spoke of unjust judges. Jethro is calling for people who will render right judgment because it is right and not for what they will be able to gain for themselves.

Lisa, this is exactly what the founders intended...they would be very shocked to see what has become of their country. As Benjamin Franklin told those who were standing outside the Continental Congress Building in Philadelphia, "You have a Republic, if you can keep it". He was talking to The People...We The People...we will not be silence. Prayers, praying for all TRUTH to come into the light for all to see.
