Federal prosecutors said Jonas Edmonds hoped to kill as many as 120 U.S. soldiers in Illinois after his cousin left to join Islamic State fighters overseas. On Sunday night, the president of the United States told a country reeling from attacks in Paris and California and a rampaging terrorist pseudo-state in Syria and Iraq that his strategy against ISIS was working. On Monday, reeling himself from a poll showing him on the path to defeat in Iowa, Donald Trump declared that all Muslims should be denied entry into the United States, including its own citizens who are outside the country on a trip. On the same day, militants cut off the fingertips of a 12-year-old boy in an attempt to force his Christian father to convert. When his father refused, they were brutalized and then crucified. This has become the plight of Christians in the Middle East at the hands of the Islamic State terrorist group, also known as ISIL or ISIS. With the terrorist massacre Dec. 2 in San Bernardino, the law-and-order issue returns to presidential politics. From 1968 into the 1980s, law and order was a domestic issue that damaged the Democrats and defeated their presidential candidates. One phrase will revive the memory: “Soft on crime.” This time it’s different. Today the law-and-order problem stretches from San Bernardino to Chicago to Syria. Same question, though: Will the Democrats protect us? Barack Obama gave that speech Sunday because the White House realized that leading from behind on terrorism means you are . . . behind. The problem is, once you fall behind the curve

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE — Moody Air Force Base officials are not releasing the names or photographs of two missing Afghan trainees. Capt. Korey Fratini said Wednesday the decision to not release the names is a U.S. Air Force decision and not one that has been made by the base commander. “It is a matter of policy,” Fratini told The Valdosta Daily Times. The Air Force has maintained a policy of not releasing the names or images of any Afghan personnel in the interest of their personal safety and the safety of their families back in Afghanistan, the captain said. Fratini said the

WASHINGTON — An affirmative action plan at the University of Texas seemed to be in trouble at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. By the end of an unusually long and tense argument, a majority of the justices appeared unpersuaded that the plan was constitutional. A ruling against the university could imperil affirmative action at colleges and universities around the nation. In a remark that drew muted gasps in the courtroom, Justice Antonin Scalia said that minority students with inferior academic credentials may be better off at “a less advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well.” “I don’t think

Why Does Obama Call ISIS ´ISIL´?

Many who closely follow the dueling Islamic terror narratives emanating from the White House are mystified by Mr. Obama´s inability (or deliberate unwillingness) to utter the phrase "Islamic terrorists." Many are curious, too, about why he refuses to call ISIS "ISIS," steadfastly insisting instead that everybody in his administration call the terror group "ISIL." What´s the difference, and why is it important? The agendas behind each diverge widely. In fact, the variance between the two is elephantine in scale. (snip) His use of ISIL could be a strong indication that he supports re-establishing Muslim rule and sharia law throughout the

Years before he met his rifle-slinging Pakistani bride, San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook plotted jihad with his boyhood next-door neighbor in 2012, it was revealed Wednesday. Farook’s pal, Islam-convert Enrique Marquez, had by then purchased the firepower to pull off an attack: the very same two AR-15s that Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik would use last week in slaughtering 14 people at the Inland Regional Center. A specific target was weighed, CNN reported, citing two US officials, though they did not identify it. But Marquez, who is cooperating with the FBI, has told investigators that he

Hey, kid listenin’ in Michigan that could be you!” The video, produced by College Humor, features SNL comedian Jay Pharaoh and the First Lady in a number of scenes at the White House including one where she is recording in a makeshift studio inside the

BILLINGS, Mont. — Republicans alleged a “whitewash” of a Colorado mining accident that unleashed 3 million gallons of toxic wastewater and requested a nonpartisan investigation after Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said Wednesday she’d seen no evidence of criminal negligence in the case. The spill was triggered by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cleanup crew doing excavation work in August at the inactive Gold King mine near Silverton, Colorado. It fouled rivers in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico with contaminants including arsenic and lead, temporarily shutting down drinking water supplies and raising concerns about long-term impacts to agriculture. The accident prompted harsh criticism

NPR Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep is a big fan of President Obama, and when he interviews him, he helpfully sets him up. In a recent interview on race relations, Inskeep added little prompts instead of questions. That’s not what Ted Cruz received on Wednesday’s show. Inskeep was blunt when discussing the new Trump idea of banning Muslims from entering America: STEVE INSKEEP: All this led to a bottom-line question when Senator Cruz visited our studios. [To Cruz] Which Muslims do you want to keep out of the United States? TED CRUZ: Well, I´m not sure that´s the way I

A central feature of ObamaCare is the requirement that everyone buy insurance or face a tax penalty. But no one seems to know how effective this penalty, which is set to more than double next year, will be. "A key area of uncertainty for 2016 is how much the increased penalties will encourage uninsured people to obtain coverage," notes a report from the Kaiser Family Foundation. But there are hints that it won´t be nearly as effective as ObamaCare architects believed. First, the administration recently downgraded enrollment expectations for next year, despite the fact that the mandate penalty for being uninsured will more

Washington- Iowa Gov. "I think it will change between now and February 1. I have a lot of confidence in the Iowa voters in making that decision," Branstad told CNN´s Chris Cuomo on "New Day." Trump trailed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the most recent Monmouth University survey of Iowa Republicans 24%-19%, but a CNN/ORC poll released the same day found Trump still dominating the field with 33% support. This is a direct contradiction of very explicit memories shared on the record by multiple people who have far less incentive to lie than, say, a truth-challenged politician seeking power. . . . Here we have the presumptive Democratic nominee essentially arguing that Benghazi victims’ relatives are either forgetful simpletons, or liars. LONDON — Set aside for a moment the violent incidents associated with people claiming to act under the authority of their Islamic faith and consider instead what passes for normalcy. Some in Britain would like to elevate to the level of wide-scale acceptance Shariah law, an Islamic legal system predicated on the religious tenets of Islam. “A number of Shariah councils operate in the [United Kingdom] to offer resolution to disputes,” writes The Express, but currently “they have no jurisdiction in criminal matters.” Not yet, anyway. There is a campaign underway to make a United Kingdom suburb Britain’s Shariah-law zone. “Former Archbishop

An unexpected surge in online purchases is putting pressure on UPS and FedEx to get packages out on time this holiday season, and that could result in extra costs for retailers. Retailers like Target broke online-sales records on Thanksgiving Day and the following Monday this year after luring shoppers with discounts. Broadly, online sales from the long weekend totaled $11 billion this year, according to Adobe Digital Index. But the rush is translating to delays in shipping that could mean packages don´t make it to consumers on time and retailers have to refund orders or offer other compensation like they did in

When Barack Obama was campaigning for the presidency in 2008 and when he was selling Obamacare to the public in 2010, he made insurance companies the villains. In fact, on the eve of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, every Democratic spokesperson who appeared on TV to support the health reform legislation had one and only one argument to make: We needed Obamacare to protect ordinary people from ruthless, profit mongering insurance companies. They said almost nothing about insuring the uninsured or controlling costs or making health care delivery more efficient. Instead, every advocate produced at least one example of

Dean G. Skelos, the former majority leader of the New York Senate, and his son were found guilty of federal corruption charges on Friday, a quick and devastating follow-up punch to the State Capitol, which has seen two entrenched leaders convicted and removed from office in less than two weeks. The jury in Federal District Court in Manhattan took roughly eight hours over two days to reach its verdict against Senator Skelos, 67, and his son, Adam B. Skelos, 33, finding them guilty of all eight bribery, extortion and conspiracy counts. The Skeloses were undone by the perversion of a simple fatherly

The Left was at it again this week, launching outrageous attacks on Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. All the usual suspects, from Mother Jones to Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.), piled on the conservative justice. There was no legitimate beef. But the Left was bound and determined to mislead the public and divert their attention from the biggest failing of racially discriminatory college admissions programs: the damage they do to the lives and careers of the supposed beneficiaries of those programs. It started with Wednesday’s oral argument in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, when Justice Scalia posed a question about academic

Climate: Want to know the latest global warming news? Don´t bother looking in U.S. media. They can´t be bothered with stories that contradict the man-made climate change narrative. But the truth is out there. Let´s start with a new paper from NASA — a distinctly American organization — that was covered by the British Express. The newspaper tells us that our space program has "found the Earth has cooled in areas of heavy industrialization where more trees have been lost and more fossil fuel burning takes place.” This is, of course, the opposite of what we´ve been told for decades. Donald J. Trump, the poll leader for the last five months in the Republican presidential race, is about to find out whether he has permanently changed the rules of politics, or if some of those old standards still linger. His long-promised “next phase” defined by new spending, such as a wave of television commercials, has so far failed to materialize, week after week. His advisers have not revealed the existence of any pollsters on their staff or any advertising team. He has no real research operation to examine his own vulnerabilities or those of his opponents and, based on Federal
