Bush skipping conservative summit

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is skipping a Family Research Council summit in Washington this month, a year after he failed to gain an invitation. 

 

A representative for the Family Research Council said Bush declined the group's offer to speak at the Values Voter Summit.

 

 

Bush had been listed on the summit's website as an invited, but not confirmed, speaker. His removal from list of invited speakers was first noted by People for the American Way, a outside progressive group. 

 

Some of his 2016 competitors, including Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), have also been invited to speak. 

 

A campaign official said that while Bush isn't able to attend, they've offered to provide a video for the summit. 

 

Bush's decision to skip the summit comes a year after he, as well as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, weren't invited to speak at the event. At the time, Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, told CBN News that "there are folks that are quite frankly not at the top of the list when it comes to values voters who they want to hear from.”

 

Bush isn't the only 2016 candidate skipping the event. Perkins told The Christian Post that Donald Trump, who is currently leading the Republican presidential field, also declined to speak at the event. 

"We have got the Values Voters Summit coming up and Donald Trump has passed. He is not going to come," Perkins added. "I think that is going to send a message to Evangelicals and values voters that he wants their support, but he is not really interested in having a conversation with them."

Trump is still listed as an invited speaker on the group's website.

Carson tours Ferguson

Republican candidate Ben Carson, the only African-American running for president, toured Ferguson, Mo., on Friday, a city that has been racked by racial unrest since the fatal police shooting of a black teen last summer. 

Retired neurosurgeon Carson had lunch with James Knowles III, the 35-year-old mayor, and later toured the city with Ferguson police. He also conducted a closed-door roundtable discussion with city officials, activists and citizens impacted by the riots that broke out in 2014 over the death of Michael Brown.

 

Notably, Carson did not meet with members of the Black Lives Matter movement, a protest group that has emerged this year to draw attention to police violence against African-American people.

Carson, who has been critical of the movement, said in a press conference on Friday that he hoped to meet with the group’s members at some point. However, he reiterated his stance that the activists are misguided. 

“My beef with the Black Lives Matter movement is that they need to add a word,” Carson said. “That word is ‘all’ — all lives matter, including ones eradicated by abortion, and those eradicated on the streets every day by violence. We need be looking at all the factors that have kept the black community in a dependent position for decades.” 

Black Lives Matter activists believe Carson's argument distracts from their efforts to draw attention to issues that have specifically plagued the black community. 

Carson has focused heavily on racial issues in recent weeks. Last month, he visited Harlem, N.Y., where he met with local community leaders and put forth the message that liberal policies have failed urban minorities. 

Carson’s supporters believe that as an African-American man who grew up in poverty in Detroit, he’s uniquely equipped to take the conservative message to a demographic that has been a Democratic stronghold for decades. 

Still, much of Carson’s message on race is that there’s too much focus on it. On Friday, he said that “we need to deemphasize race.” 

“I think that a lot of people perceive everything through racial eyes, but my point is that we don’t have to do that,” Carson said. “What we have to do instead is begin to see people as people.” 

It’s the kind of broad and positive message that has so far helped propel Carson into the top tier of candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination. He is firmly in second place in the race, trailing only front-runner Donald Trump. 

Carson ignited a feud with Trump this week when he seemed to question the real estate mogul’s Christian faith. 

Trump shot back, calling Carson “an OK doctor,” and accusing him of being “heavy into the world of abortion.” Carson is pro-life, but as a neurosurgeon, has in the past performed research using tissue from aborted fetuses. 

On Friday, Carson was asked to respond to Trump’s attacks. 

“The question is, do I want to respond to Donald Trump? The answer is no,” Carson said. “I really don’t. What I’ve discovered is that the media loves to stoke controversy and have people fighting like gladiators, and that’s exactly the wrong thing to do.”

Carson has the highest favorability rating of any of the Republican presidential candidates, and much of it is rooted in his nice-guy persona. He has said he will not attack the other candidates, and other than the understated dig at Trump’s faith this week, has largely stuck to that pledge. 

Carson even passed on an opportunity to criticize President Obama, saying he wouldn’t comment on a question about how the president has handled racial issues. 

However, Carson did criticize the administration for sending the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the Ferguson police department. A DOJ report found that officers in the city unfairly targeted black people for arrest. 

“Some of the citizens here feel that on the balance, the DOJ’s involvement was more hurtful than helpful, that these things could be handled better at the local level, and have been handled at the local level,” Carson said.

I am sure there are alot of citizens there  that realize that Obama admin is causing their neighbor hood to be more dangerous by fanning flames of division of race. I am sure it is terrifying to live there never knowing what is going to be torched next.

Trump says deportations of immigrants could be finished in two years

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump this week offered more specificity on his plan to handle illegal immigration, floating a two-year benchmark for deportations. 

Trump said it would take 18-24 months to get the estimated 12 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally out of the country.

“We have to get them out," Trump said on a conference call with Alabama Republicans. "If we have wonderful cases, they can come back in but they have to come back in legally."

The businessman said that goal could be met with "really good management," when asked on an Alabama Republican Party call whether immigrants could be deported in five to 10 years.

Trump outlined his plan to tackle illegal immigration in a six-page proposal released last month, and has repeatedly said on the campaign trail that illegal immigrants "have to go."

Donald Trump went on FOX and Friends Weekend on Saturday to talk about Rick Perry’s announcement that he was dropping out of the 2016 race.

A frustrated Governor Perry lashed out at Donald Trump as he exited the race.

Donald Trump said he was surprised at Perry’s anger.

“I knew Rick prior to his getting really nasty to me. He did get very nasty and I responded accordingly. But, he’s a really terrific guy, a terrific person. I was really surprised to see what took place frankly. And he gave a major speech in Washington about me. And I don’t know if I was honored or if I was insulted. But I fully understand what he was saying. And he did say ‘he or she’ so he’s probably referring to Carly, not me. I knew him so well and I was surprised that he became quite angry.“

Trump: Carson doesn’t have the energy to be president

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is shifting his attacks in Ben Carson's direction.

 

The real estate mogul went after the soft-spoken Carson for his lack of energy, a criticism he had previously reserved for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

 

“I don’t think Ben has the energy,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday. “Ben is a nice man. But when you’re negotiating against China, and you’re negotiating against these Japanese guys who are going to come in waves … we need people who are really smart, who have tremendous deal-making skills, and have tremendous energy.”

“We need people with an aggressive tone, and we need people with tremendous energy, and I’m your candidate, OK?” he added.

 

Trump also went after Carson for questioning his Christian faith.

 

“In all fairness, Ben hit me on my faith, and you don’t hit a person on his faith,” Trump said. “I don’t know him, he knows nothing about me.”

 

Carson had contrasted himself with Trump by saying he does not "deny" his faith at a campaign rally in Anaheim, Calif., earlier this week.

 

The retired neurosurgeon later clarified that he did not mean to question Trump’s faith.

 

Carson is Trump’s nearest contender in Iowa. A recent poll released by Monmouth University found the two tied in Iowa at 23 percent support each, the first poll not to find Trump in sole possession of the lead since July.

 

Other polls still have Trump leading in the important Iowa caucus, and a RealClearPolitics polling average has him ahead of Carson by nearly 7 points in the Hawkeye State.

 

Trump was speaking at a tailgate party before a football game between the University of Iowa and Iowa State. 

 

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fl.), who are also running for the Republican nomination, attended the tailgate as well.
