  1925 - 1955:
  
  At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno.

  TO ALL THE
  KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
  1930’s, 40’s, and 50’s !!
  
  First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank - While they were pregnant.
  
  They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
  
  Then, after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
  Covered with bright colored
  Lead-based paints.
  
  We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
  And, when we rode our bikes,
  We had baseball caps,
  Not helmets, on our heads.

  
  As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..

  
  Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
  
  We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

  
  We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
  
  We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
  And we weren't overweight.
  WHY?
  Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
  
  We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

  
  No one was able to reach us all day .. .
  And, we were OKAY.

  
  We would spend hours building
  Our go-carts out of scrapsand
  then ride them down the hill,

  Only to find out that we forgot about brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned To Solve the problem.

  
  We did not
  Have Play Stations, Nintendo
  and X-boxes. There were
  No video games,
  No 150 channels on cable,
  No video movies
  Or DVDs,
  No surround-sound or CDs,
  No cell phones,
  No personal computers,
  No Internet and
  No chat rooms.
  WE HAD FRIENDS
  And we went
  Outside and found them!
  
  We fell out of
  trees, got cut,
  Broke bones and
  Lost teeth,
  And there were
  No lawsuits
  From those accidents.
  
  We would get
  Spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand,
  And no one would call child services to report abuse.
  
  We ate worms,
  And mud pies
  Made from dirt,
  And
  The worms did
  Not live in us forever.
  
  We were given
  BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
  22 rifles for our 12th, rode horses,
  made up games with sticks and
  tennis balls, and

  -although we were
  Told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
  
  We rode bikes
  Or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell,
  or just Walked in and talked to them.

   

  Little League had
  tryouts
  And not everyone
  Made the team.
  Those who didn't
  Had to learn
  To deal with
  Disappointment.
  
  Imagine that!!

   

  
  The idea of a parent
  Bailing us out
  If we broke the law
  was unheard of ...
  They actually sided with the law!

  
  These generations have
  Produced some of the best risk-takers,
  Problem solvers, and
  Inventors ever.
  
  The past 60 to 85 years
  Have seen an explosion
  of innovation and new ideas.
  
  We had freedom,
  Failure, success and responsibility,
  and we learned

  Ho w to deal with it all.
  
  If YOU are One of those born
  Between 1925-1955, CONGRATULATIONS!
  
  You might want
  to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers
  and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
  
  While you are at it,
  forward it to your kids,
  so they will know
  how brave and lucky
  their parents were.
  
  Kind of makes
  you want to run through the house
  with scissors, doesn't it ?

OMG !!!!! This is too Awesome!!!!!  So true ....so true...

After moving to the house we have no.... we purchased a new refrigerator..... needless to say our daughter now 24 played in that box for an entire week as a secret hiding place... then a fort, then a space ship..... and a secret spot for her and the the dog to hide in.... I had to cut a few windows and made shutters.....it was too cute... we were away for the evening and it rained so hard that there was no saving that box despite all we did t try and dry it out.  We often giggle about that when it rains as we sit on the porch, recalling days now that she is graduating and readying herself for grad school.

Everyone should share this, print this out and place it in holiday cards to friends and family.  We ALL need to bring this back into our lives... DE GADGET for even a wee little bit.   :)

Found this among some old papers I kept.

This was also something I collected while growing up. (Some my thoughts, and many more from older family members.)  People were asked to save old tin cans & old cooking fats - to help make explosives (was during WWII and my dad was there.)  Tin foil was saved from gum wrappers and cigarettes. We also had "V" mail - sender wrote the message on special forms - microfilmed to reduce space and weight; flown across the Pacific. There the microfilm was photographically enlarged, printed and mailed to the recipient.  Stars were hung in home windows for a family military member and a gold one lost while serving. 

(My mom's family lost 2 sons - first two in Madison) one was 19, the other 21. I have their starts, and pictures and many papers. The government is still looking to find her younger brother, taken blood samples and everything. And I get messages once a year about what is going on.  He was in Africa, Sergeant Donald Mickelson, missing in action.)  I was only 2, 3 years old so never got the honor of meeting either uncle. 

Our margarine was white, we squeezed the yellow packet to color it yellow. Enjoyed the task, hated the margarine.(Here in Wisconsin, we had to get it from Illinois - farms here.) 

Nylon was rationed for the war, so rayon stockings were in. Some women painted their legs, instead. Took an eyebrow pencil to make the pretend line at the back of the leg. 

We also had black outs and brown outs - 'course we lived in Madison, so this was sometimes an issue. We had (an still have) Truax Field. Back then those planes were noisy and large. 

With a neighbor's 9 kids and my 3 brothers and sister, we had many a war fight going on. Good thing we lived in a dead-end street, across from several large industrial businesses..

Can't help myself - cleaning up my old paperwork because I can't use my computer as I used to. At least I have We the People and Internet Explorer, sometimes.  Found this from 2011 - seems the Dems haven't changed.

Wrote a letter to James Finn Garner, an author who wrote  "The Politically Correct Bedtime Stories Trilogy."

"Rex Koko, Private Clown", "Recut Madness," "Bardball, for baseball doggerel fresh daily."  

'I found a copy of your book, "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories;" read it and was enchanted.  It is so true of current politics even now. One of the stories, "Chicken Little" describes exactly what is happening in Madison, WI. all of the time.  Instead of a donkey, Chicken Little could represent the Democratic party. I wonder if you would give me permission to sen a copy of this story to the local newspaper - Wisconsin State Journal.  I find it so appropriate.  We have Democrats running away to Illinois ("The Sky is falling) then suing because their partisan Supreme Court Justice candidate was beat, and o they called for a recount.  Then they recalled 6 Senators for passing a bill, and the GOP recalled 3 Democrats for running away.  "Foxy Loxy" is working overtime to stop the recalls, to stop the Supreme Court, to stop the Collective Bargaining Law from being enacted.  Sounds just like your Chicken Little story.  Sue, sue, sue,  then counter-sue, sue, sue.'  

(The writer gave me permission, and made suggestions if they didn't want to print as is. I followed his recommendations, but never saw the newspaper. So not sure if it got posted or not.)

Anyway, we won against the Democrats after that fiasco. Took a while though; and that's when I was still getting up to the square to speak out. Wish I was doing that again.
