U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last month said operations would target recently-arrived undocumented migrants in a bid to discourage a surge of Central American families at the southwest border.

ICE said in a statement its focus was arresting people with criminal histories but any immigrant found in violation of U.S. laws was subject to arrest. –Reuters

The new sweep comes after migrant apprehensions on the southwest border hit a 13-year high in May, only to dramatically drop in June after Mexico was forced by President Trump to deploy their National Guard to help stem the flow of mostly Central American migrants into the United States.

According to documents published this week by migrant rights groups, ICE has previously made more so-called “collateral” arrests of non-criminal migrants (aside from residency) than the criminals they were targeting. The rights groups say that the US government’s ‘generalized threat’ against illegals is harmful to the US economy, as it forces adults to miss work and children to skip school if they feel they may be at risk of arrest.

“We have to be ready, not just when Trump announces it, because there are arrests every day,” said New Mexico migrant rights organizer Elsa Lopez, who works for Somos Un Pueblo Unido. The organization helps migrants enter the United States; advising them on their civil rights, and connecting them to a phone network that will send alerts if ICE agents are in their neighborhood.

A rising number of migrants are coming from outside Central America, including India, Cuba and African countries. The Del Rio, Texas, Border Patrol sector on Friday reported the arrest of over 1,000 Haitians since June 10. –Reuters

Trump Explains Why He Wants Citizenship Question on Census as He Considers Executive Order.

President Donald Trump said that it’s crucial to have the citizenship question on the 2020 Census for a range of issues. “You need it for many reasons. Number one, you need it for Congress, you need it for Congress, for districting, you need it for appropriations, where are the funds going. How many people are there? Are they citizens, are they not citizens? You need it for many reasons,” Trump told reporters in Washington on July 5.

The president said earlier Friday that he was mulling an executive order that places the question on the census.

Trump said that he spoke with Attorney General William Barr on Friday about the situation.

“We have a number of different avenues. We could use all of them or one. We’re doing very well on that. We’re spending 15 to 20 billion dollars on a census. We’re doing everything. We’re finding out everything about everybody. Think of it: 15 to 20 billion dollars, and you’re not allowed to ask them, are you a citizen?” he said.

“And by the way, if you look at the history of our country, it’s almost always been asked. So we’re fighting very hard against the system, that’s a very difficult system but we’ll make a decision. The attorney general is working on that right now.”

Trump said that an executive order is one of four or five options that are on the table, also saying his administration could print the census now without the question and add it on later.

Trump has focused intensely on the issue this week, repeatedly giving updates on the situation. He said that he told government workers to “do whatever is necessary” to get the question on the census, while Department of Justice lawyers indicated they were looking at possible “legally available” paths forward in a conference call with a federal judge on Wednesday.

Lawyers told the judge that the administration was not giving up the fight to add the question to the census, according to a court filing in Maryland. “[I]f a viable path forward is found, DOJ’s current plan would be to file a motion in the Supreme Court to request instructions on remand to govern further proceedings,” the filing stated.

After the Trump administration announced it wanted the question placed back on the census—it was on for centuries until the 1950s—legal groups challenged the plan, claiming it would lead to illegal immigrants declining to respond to the once-in-a-decade census.

A federal judge in February ruled that the question could be on the census. The Supreme Court in June said that the administration’s rationale for including the question wasn’t sufficient but didn’t close the door on the question being included if the administration provided an explanation for including the question that the nation’s highest court considered appropriate.

Some have said the ruling leaves room for Trump to print the census now with the question on it.

“Completely. Print the census with the question—and issue a statement explaining why—’because we should.’ Done,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said.

“Neither the Constitution nor the Roberts opinion say the question cannot be included,” he added. “The President can add it & SCOTUS didn’t say otherwise—just that it wanted a better rationale than Commerce gave… so POTUS ought to do that.”

One former judge said Trump had the authority to place the question on the census through an executive order.

Steven Schier, a professor of political science at Carleton College in Minnesota, told KTSP that he thinks Trump’s chances of getting the question on the census are around 50/50.

“This has been a central theme of the Trump presidency and the Trump campaign in 2016. It was all about citizenship and immigration. He does not want to let this issue go,” Schier said.

“If there is an avenue by which this ends up on the census, it will be an unprecedented avenue, but on the other hand, we’ve got an unprecedented presidency.” **** YEP, HE'S KEEPING AMERICA GREAT' ****

The National Border Patrol Council’s El Paso chapter and several Customs and Border Protection personnel told the Washington Examiner aides to Rep. veronica escobar, who took over 2020 Democratic presidential candidate beto o’rourke’s district, and the local Catholic diocese have interviewed thousands of migrants in Juarez over the past few weeks to find cases where Department of Homeland Security officials may have wrongly returned people.

“What we believe is happening is veronica escobar’s office is going … to basically second-guess and obstruct work already done by the Border Patrol,” said one senior union official, who shared evidence with the Washington Examiner from concerned CBP managers and rank-and-file members. Those documents have been held to protect identities.

Under the bilateral Migration Protection Protocols, or “Remain in Mexico” policy, anyone returned must be fluent in 'mexican' because they may have to reside in Mexico up to five years until a U.S. federal judge decides their asylum claim.

A Demwitocratic politician’s aides re-escorting people back to the port are telling officers the Central American individual with them cannot speak 'mexican' despite their having communicated in it days earlier, CBP officials said.

“What we’re hearing from management is that they’re attempting to return people, and the story was changed in Mexico, where a person who understood mexican before, now doesn’t understand — where a person who didn’t have any health issues before, now has health issues,” the union representative said.

All three border officials stated that the interviews might be used to suggest the Border Patrol is wrongfully turning away a large number of asylum-seekers.

“We had finally found a happy medium ‘cause we always get crapped on when it comes to immigration laws, and then they’re finding loopholes to bring them back,” the second official said.

Mark H. Metcalf, a former federal immigration judge during the George W. Bush administration, said the involvement of mexicano veronica escobar’s office was likely “more of a stunt than a genuine threat to the integrity of the process.”- “She’s trying to obviously say these people have been wrongly denied their claims and they’re waiting when they shouldn’t be,” said Metcalf.

However, he said a criminal case would exist if veronica escobar were found to be complicit in an effort to perpetrate a fraud, which would have to include knowingly injecting false statements during interviews, follow-up conversations, and documents presented to U.S. officials.

“By opposing a system that assists migrants and speeds wait times, these individuals are exposing a cause that looks more like a cover story for their political motivations. Any efforts to subvert and obstruct federal law enforcement operations should receive a full review,” the Homeland Security official said in a text.

The boy has since returned to Mexico because the medical condition was not diagnosed by a medical professional but by an aide of the congresswoman, one official said Friday.

“Management saw that form and was like, ‘What is this?’ and reached out to our International Liaison Unit.

And ILU said, ‘Yes, mexicano veronica escobar and several other politicians are in Mexico trying to defeat the MPP program,'” the union said.

Officials only discussed one port of entry in El Paso but said they knew of three other incidents where escobar’s aides had walked back a “Remain in Mexico” program recipient.

In another confirmed case, a female migrant was brought back to the port after claiming to have been raped in Juarez.

The union official said the onslaught of interviews suggests federal resources are being misspent.

“Resources are being diverted into a foreign country in an attempt to reverse already-decided legal action, meaning these people were found inadmissible under a new program and they must remain in Mexico. They’re trying to subvert that,” the official said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told lawmakers Wednesday she expects the department to apprehend 900,000 illegal aliens at the border this year, both between ports of entry and at border crossings.

“Our nation is facing a dire humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border,” Nielsen told the House Homeland Security Committee. “The agency is now on track to apprehend more migrants crossing illegally in the first six months of this fiscal year than the entirety of FY17.”

“The total number we’re on track for — 900,000 apprehensions this year,” she said.

Slightly more than 310,000 people were arrested for illegally crossing into the U.S. in all of 2017. Another 216,000 were turned away at ports for lacking legal documents to enter.

From October through January, approximately 60,000 people each month were either arrested after illegally crossing or after trying to cross at a border crossing point without legal permission.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday more than 76,000 people were encountered in February, making it the largest monthly number in 12 years.

In 2018, a total 683,000 undocumented immigrants tried to illegally enter the U.S. at ports or between border crossings.

CBP said Tuesday they expect the numbers to continue spiking this spring. During President Trump’s first few months in office, monthly apprehensions dipped to 17,000 people.

This was a unique Fourth of July, to say the least. Patriotism has become a political issue over the past few years, perhaps more than any time since the Vietnam War. However, to show where we are in July 2019, you could actually make the argument that the United Arab Emirates was more unambiguously pro-American than we thought.

We saw sneakers get recalled because colin kaepernick and Nike thought the Betsy Ross flag might offend people.

We saw three major broadcast networks decline to show President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” display in Washington D.C., probably because an expanded fireworks display and the presence of military equipment might offend people.

We even saw The Washington Post run an Op-Ed where the author talked about how awful fireworks are because they can maim people who use them incorrectly, they scare dogs and they’re associated with President Trump this year because of that whole “Salute to America” thing.

Happy birthday, America!

Now, take a look at the world’s tallest building, located in Dubai, and ask yourself if you saw this much-unabashed love for the flag in the country where it’s from:

I’m not just talking about the “Salute to America.” Trump didn’t speak a political word during a speech, which everyone seemed to fear would be political. If you feel the event was political, fine. I doubt there’s any way I can convince you that IT WASN'T.

Then again, it’s also most likely you didn’t actually see the event that you’re so busy condemning. That’s not because you were Resistancing, but there was also a dearth of ways to see it. ABC, CBS and NBC didn’t cover the event. Neither did MSNBC.

In fact, when CBS News did a writeup about ways you could watch the “Salute to America,” this was their opening paragraph: “Despite widespread criticism over the distracting from the holiday, President Donald Trump is set to honor America’s armed forces with music, military demonstrations, flyovers and much more in the administration’s ‘Salute to America’ on July 4th. The president’s critics have chastised him for bringing costly military equipment reminiscent of more dictatorial regimes and for placing himself center stage in the typically nonpartisan celebration.”

I understand pure journalistic objectivity is more of an abstraction than an achievable goal. That being said, if you’re working for an outfit like CBS, you ought to at least attempt it on occasion. Accusing the president of being a dictator and passing on the most overheated rhetoric of his opponents as if it were gospel isn’t quite the ethical approach they’re supposed to teach you in journalism school.

We’re in an era where only 22% of Democrats were willing to tell Gallup they were “extremely proud” to be American. (Republicans were at 76%, and Gallup noted that “even when barack obuma was in office, Republicans’ extreme pride never fell below 68%.”) It’s an era where a former athlete can tell an athletic shoe company that the Betsy Ross flag is tainted by associations with slavery — and not only will the company believe him, they’ll recall a sneaker over it.

Yes, we are in an era where American pride and history are profoundly unfashionable. Yet, the rest of the world feels a lot less ambiguous than we do about it. The left scoffs at displaying our military might; our allies realize it keeps them safe. The left scoffs at the flag and what it represents; the world views it as a symbol of freedom and strength.

Tim Tebow is constantly under attack from the mainstream media.

But the washed up quarterback just got owned by Ted Cruz when he tried to bash America on the 4th of July.

kaepernick pulled a quote out of context from famed abolitionist Frederick Douglas to bash America on Twitter.

“What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? This Fourth of July is yours, not mine…There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.” - Frederick Douglass

That’s when Senator Ted Cruz fired back a barrage of facts about the speech and the man kaepernick was quoting out of context:

"You quote a mighty and historic speech by the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, but, without context, many modern readers will misunderstand.

Two critical points: "This speech was given in 1852, before the Civil War, when the abomination of slavery still existed. Thanks to Douglass and so many other heroes, we ended that grotesque evil and have made enormous strides to protecting the civil rights of everybody.

But Cruz wasn’t the only one to slam kaepernick’s shameless attempt to misrepresent Frederick Douglass’ views for his own anti-American crusade.

National Review online editor Charles C.W. Cooke launched his own barrage to add further context to Douglass’ speech and views on America.

"Now, take the Constitution according to its plain reading, and I defy the presentation of a single pro-slavery clause in it. On the other hand it will be found to contain principles and purposes, entirely hostile to the existence of slavery .. Interpreted as it ought to be interpreted, the Constitution is a GLORIOUS LIBERTY DOCUMENT. Read its preamble, consider its purposes. Is slavery among them? When it comes down to it, kaepernick isn’t protesting the flag or America because of perceived problems of police brutality or racism.

Last week, I wrote about the Alabama Ford dealership that was giving out certificates for shotguns, as well as a flag and a Bible, for each new truck being sold. It was a sale about as American as you could get.  The only way you could add to it would be to also hand out apple pies.

Unfortunately, the dealership was forced to stop with the shotguns.

Chatom Ford in Chatom, Ala., released a statement saying, “We were running a promotion celebrating this country’s independence. Ford Motor Company has asked us to stop running the advertisement.

They manufacture the products we are franchised to sell, so we are complying with their request.” The small-town dealer added that they “appreciate everyone’s support,” and will honor the promotion up to the point when Ford made them stop it.

General Sales Manager Koby Palmer told USA Today that his dealership wasn’t just “handing out shotguns in Alabama.” Customers would get their Bible and flag on the spot, but received a certificate good for one shotgun at a couple of participating licensed firearms dealers — and all the usual background checks, age restrictions, etc., still applied.

The dealer said they’d stopped the promo at the “request” of Ford, but it’s a safe bet that there was some muscle behind the “request.”

Under the new, presumably Ford-approved promotion, Chatom says, “We’re going to give away a Bible, an American Flag and a gift certificate to use wherever you want for whatever you want.”

But that’s not nearly as fun, is it? Any dealer can put a little cash on the hood, as they say, to help move the metal, but what Chatom did took a little more imagination. And with Independence Day just hours away, the whole “Flag, Bible, Shotgun with your Ford Pickup” thing shouted ‘MERICA! in the best way possible.

It’s difficult to imagine that anyone in the town of Chatom was offended, if moving five cars in three days is any indication. There were no reports of protestors, picketers, or other assorted buttinskies… except for the jittery folks in Dearborn.

Chatom Ford wasn’t keeping a pile of shotguns in the back. They were handing out certificates to the customer who could then go to a licensed dealer and get their shotgun. This is how this kind of thing normally works, because federal laws are a thing and no one wants to run afoul of them.

It’s very likely that Ford’s “request” was something a little more forceful than, “Hey, guys? Could you, like, please stop that?”

Unfortunately, to me, the problem is more a case of the public has turned on guns and gun ownership so severely that Ford was terrified that if it didn’t clamp down on this, it would hurt them across the nation.

Even saying, “Look, this is an independent dealership who is doing this without our consent or approval because they don’t work for us,” wouldn’t have been enough. Not by a longshot.

So, it felt it had to do something, and in the process, it may have cost this dealership some business. As Green notes above, a gift certificate for anything you want doesn’t have the same punch as a gift certificate for a shotgun.

Plus, Ford’s kind of deluding itself if it doesn’t think the Bible and flag being given away isn’t going to piss off some folks all on their own.

At least with a shotgun, the new truck owner would be able to defend themselves from the violent mobs.

President Donald Trump said that it’s crucial to have the citizenship question on the 2020 Census for a range of issues. “You need it for many reasons. Number one, you need it for Congress, you need it for Congress, for districting, you need it for appropriations, where are the funds going. How many people are there? Are they citizens, are they not citizens? You need it for many reasons,” Trump told reporters in Washington on July 5.

The president said earlier Friday that he was mulling an executive order that places the question on the census.

Trump said that he spoke with Attorney General William Barr on Friday about the situation.

“We have a number of different avenues. We could use all of them or one. We’re doing very well on that. We’re spending 15 to 20 billion dollars on a census. We’re doing everything. We’re finding out everything about everybody. Think of it: 15 to 20 billion dollars, and you’re not allowed to ask them, are you a citizen?” he said.

“And by the way, if you look at the history of our country, it’s almost always been asked. So we’re fighting very hard against the system, that’s a very difficult system but we’ll make a decision. The attorney general is working on that right now.”

Trump said that an executive order is one of four or five options that are on the table, also saying his administration could print the census now without the question and add it on later.

Trump has focused intensely on the issue this week, repeatedly giving updates on the situation. He said that he told government workers to “do whatever is necessary” to get the question on the census, while Department of Justice lawyers indicated they were looking at possible “legally available” paths forward in a conference call with a federal judge on Wednesday.

Lawyers told the judge that the administration was not giving up the fight to add the question to the census, according to a court filing in Maryland. “[I]f a viable path forward is found, DOJ’s current plan would be to file a motion in the Supreme Court to request instructions on remand to govern further proceedings,” the filing stated.

After the Trump administration announced it wanted the question placed back on the census—it was on for centuries until the 1950s—legal groups challenged the plan, claiming it would lead to illegal immigrants declining to respond to the once-in-a-decade census.

A federal judge in February ruled that the question could be on the census. The Supreme Court in June said that the administration’s rationale for including the question wasn’t sufficient but didn’t close the door on the question being included if the administration provided an explanation for including the question that the nation’s highest court considered appropriate.

Some have said the ruling leaves room for Trump to print the census now with the question on it.

“Completely. Print the census with the question—and issue a statement explaining why—’because we should.’ Done,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said.

“Neither the Constitution nor the Roberts opinion say the question cannot be included,” he added. “The President can add it & SCOTUS didn’t say otherwise—just that it wanted a better rationale than Commerce gave… so POTUS ought to do that.”

One former judge said Trump had the authority to place the question on the census through an executive order.

Steven Schier, a professor of political science at Carleton College in Minnesota, told KTSP that he thinks Trump’s chances of getting the question on the census are around 50/50.

“This has been a central theme of the Trump presidency and the Trump campaign in 2016. It was all about citizenship and immigration. He does not want to let this issue go,” Schier said.

“If there is an avenue by which this ends up on the census, it will be an unprecedented avenue, but on the other hand, we’ve got an unprecedented presidency.” **** YEP, HE'S KEEPING AMERICA GREAT' ****

Demwitocratic congresswoman mexicano veronica escobar is sending staff to Mexico’s northern border town of Ciudad Juárez to find migrants returned from El Paso, Texas, under the “remain in Mexico” policy, then coaching them to pretend they cannot speak mexicano to exploit a loophole letting them to return to the U.S.

The National Border Patrol Council’s El Paso chapter and several Customs and Border Protection personnel told the Washington Examiner aides to Rep. veronica escobar, who took over 2020 Democratic presidential candidate beto o’rourke’s district, and the local Catholic diocese have interviewed thousands of migrants in Juarez over the past few weeks to find cases where Department of Homeland Security officials may have wrongly returned people.

“What we believe is happening is veronica escobar’s office is going … to basically second-guess and obstruct work already done by the Border Patrol,” said one senior union official, who shared evidence with the Washington Examiner from concerned CBP managers and rank-and-file members. Those documents have been held to protect identities.

Under the bilateral Migration Protection Protocols, or “Remain in Mexico” policy, anyone returned must be fluent in 'mexican' because they may have to reside in Mexico up to five years until a U.S. federal judge decides their asylum claim.

A Demwitocratic politician’s aides re-escorting people back to the port are telling officers the Central American individual with them cannot speak 'mexican' despite their having communicated in it days earlier, CBP officials said.

“What we’re hearing from management is that they’re attempting to return people, and the story was changed in Mexico, where a person who understood mexican before, now doesn’t understand — where a person who didn’t have any health issues before, now has health issues,” the union representative said.

The union learned from an intelligence unit within CBP that those doing the interviews are wearing recording devices during the interviews to tape conversations and possibly listen back later.

“They went through and interviewed everybody, cherry-picked them, brought them back, and now are using them as tag lines. They’re going over there and manufacturing a lot of these issues,” said the union official.

All three border officials stated that the interviews might be used to suggest the Border Patrol is wrongfully turning away a large number of asylum-seekers.

“We had finally found a happy medium ‘cause we always get crapped on when it comes to immigration laws, and then they’re finding loopholes to bring them back,” the second official said.

Mark H. Metcalf, a former federal immigration judge during the George W. Bush administration, said the involvement of mexicano veronica escobar’s office was likely “more of a stunt than a genuine threat to the integrity of the process.”- “She’s trying to obviously say these people have been wrongly denied their claims and they’re waiting when they shouldn’t be,” said Metcalf.

However, he said a criminal case would exist if veronica escobar were found to be complicit in an effort to perpetrate a fraud, which would have to include knowingly injecting false statements during interviews, follow-up conversations, and documents presented to U.S. officials.

A Department of Homeland Security official aware of the situation said Demwitocrats, nonprofit organizations, and 2020 hopefuls “are furious that these migrants” are not permitted to “await their court dates in the U.S., where they have the opportunity to disappear and slip into the interior never to be seen again.”

“By opposing a system that assists migrants and speeds wait times, these individuals are exposing a cause that looks more like a cover story for their political motivations. Any efforts to subvert and obstruct federal law enforcement operations should receive a full review,” the Homeland Security official said in a text.

In one incident, an mexicano veronica escobar aide and diocese official walked a male migrant over the bridge in June and asked for him to be admitted into the U.S. because they had found he had “cognitive disabilities.” Officers took the boy and turned the case over to the Border Patrol, where an agent found a Constituent Information and Privacy Release Form with the U.S. House of Representatives seal on it inside the 17-year-old’s file. Two officials said the paper would have to have been put in his file while he was interviewed in Mexico and was not supposed to have been left there because it would reveal to the Border Patrol that a member of Congress or their staff was meeting with migrants in Mexico.

The boy has since returned to Mexico because the medical condition was not diagnosed by a medical professional but by an aide of the congresswoman, one official said Friday.

“Management saw that form and was like, ‘What is this?’ and reached out to our International Liaison Unit.

And ILU said, ‘Yes, mexicano veronica escobar and several other politicians are in Mexico trying to defeat the MPP program,'” the union said.

Officials only discussed one port of entry in El Paso but said they knew of three other incidents where escobar’s aides had walked back a “Remain in Mexico” program recipient.

In another confirmed case, a female migrant was brought back to the port after claiming to have been raped in Juarez.

The union official said the onslaught of interviews suggests federal resources are being misspent.

“Resources are being diverted into a foreign country in an attempt to reverse already-decided legal action, meaning these people were found inadmissible under a new program and they must remain in Mexico. They’re trying to subvert that,” the official said.

The Trump administration has started notifying illegal aliens that they are going to be subjected to massive fines — up to nearly $500,000 — for failing to leave the United States after being ordered to do so.- “The Department of Homeland Security sent out a batch of notices across the country to targeted individuals ordering them to pay fines of up to nearly $500,000 for ‘failing to depart the U.S. as previously agreed,’ among other factors,”

NPR reported. “The letters come as the Trump administration prepares to carry out delayed immigration sweeps of migrant families who have received deportation orders. President Trump said Monday, while signing legislation providing $4.6 billion in funding to address the influx of migrants from Central America, that the immigration raids will begin after the July 4 holiday if Congress can’t pass new restrictions on asylum laws.”

NPR obtained a notice that was sent by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer to an illegal alien notifying them that “It is the intention of ICE to order you pay a fine in the amount of $497,777.”

ICE spokesman Matthew Bourke told NPR: “ICE is committed to using various enforcement methods — including arrest, detention, technological monitoring and financial penalties — to enforce U.S. immigration law and maintain the integrity of legal orders issued by judges.”

NPR added that ICE has said that the Immigration and Nationality Act allows the government the authority to impose fines against illegal aliens for not leaving the country.

This latest development in the administration’s war on illegal immigration comes as the president recently announced that ICE will likely be conducting immigration raids after July 4 targeting those who are in the country illegally.

Trump has also rattled off multiple tweets this week about the topic, ranging from adding the citizenship question on the 2020 census to calling out Democrats for failing to work with the administration to help solve the crisis on the southern border.
