Here Are The Copies Of The Letters To Send To School Superintendents About Constitution Week Law

Adopt a School Program to promote Constitutional Education during Constitution Week Sept 17-23
Letter to be filled in with the appropriate information and sent this May:

Date

To the Superintendent of the __________________________ School District:

As a concerned parent and citizen living in ____________, I would like to know what plans have been made to present an educational program which will teach the United Constitution to all students in the _____________________schools during national Constitution Week, September 17-23.

In 2004, Congress passed Public Law 108-447, which mandates that every school which receives Federal funds shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of every year for the students enrolled in the school. **

In 2010, a number of Tea Party-related groups across the country contacted their school districts in regard to their district’s plans for Constitution Day. In some cases, the school districts were unaware of the law and the obligation to teach the Constitution. Tea Party activists helped these schools comply with the law and let the local media know which districts were cooperating in this important project.

This year concerned parents/citizens are launching an even larger campaign in an effort to raise public awareness in their communities of which schools are teaching the founding documents of our nation on Constitution Day. I am confident the ____________________________ school district will participate in this important activity.

I am interested in what curriculum the teachers in the district plan to present to each grade. If materials have not been chosen, the district may want to contact The National Center for Constitutional Studies (www.nccs.net) a non-profit educational organization which provides a comprehensive teaching program for all grades.

The NCCS package includes A More Perfect Union, a video recreation of the Constitutional Convention (the DVD has received the Bicentennial seal, which recognizes the video is historically accurate). A teacher’s guide, posters of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and a pocket-size copy of the Constitution is also included in the package.

Public schools can order the package for $19.95 plus shipping, and additional pocket-size copies of the Constitution for distribution. If the school budget doesn’t allow for the purchase of the curriculum, please contact me, as I will be privileged to assist you in obtaining the program for your schools.

NCCS can be reached at www.nccs.net or by calling (800) 388-4512. Their curriculum has been adopted at hundreds of schools and sets the standard for teaching this critical part of U.S. history.

I look forward to hearing from you about this project and how parents/citizens might help the district in complying with the law.

Sincerely,

To the Superintendent and School Board of the __________________________ School District:

I contacted you in May regarding the district’s plans to present an educational program which will teach the United Constitution to all students in the _____________________schools during national Constitution Week, September 17-23, 2011.

I am following up to see what program the _________________________ district will offer its students, as required by Public Law 108-447, which mandates that every school which receives Federal funds shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of every year for the students enrolled in the school. **

Tea Party activists have worked hard this spring and summer to be sure every public school district in the U.S. is aware of the law and has a curriculum in place to comply with it. I am confident the ____________________________ school district will participate in this important activity.

If a curriculum has not been selected, the district may want to contact The National Center for Constitutional Studies (www.nccs.net), a non-profit educational organization which provides a comprehensive teaching program for all grades.

Final Letter for the First Week In September:

Date

To the News Editor:

As a concerned parent/citizen residing in ___________, I wanted let you know about an important educational program which is required by law to be taught in all U.S. public schools each September, and to seek your help in informing our community which school districts are complying with the law and which districts are not in compliance.

In 2004, Congress enacted Public Law 108-447. Section 111 states that "(b) Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution."

September 17 falls within Constitution Week, a nationwide observance of the fundamental importance of the Constitution in U.S. history.

Local citizens/activists have launched an active campaign to encourage their school districts to comply with the law. They have contacted the school district superintendent in their communities to inquire about plans to teach the Constitution during the designated week. They have even offered to purchase the curriculum for schools districts that are strapped financially.

Our community deserves to know which school districts will comply with the law, and what programs they have devised to teach the Constitution to our students. A simple public announcement over the school PA system is not enough to be in compliance. A full curriculum must be offered.

Please consider asking reporters to contact the schools listed below and ask what plans they have made to observe Constitution Week and comply with the federal law.
