ALEXANDER HAMILTON 1787 Soon after the Constitutional Convention: "For my own part, I sincerely esteem it a system which without the finger of God, never could have been suggested and agreed upon by such a diversity of interests. "

GEORGE WASHINGTON (Thanksgiving Day Proclamation) 1789 "Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection, aid, and favors...Now, therefore, do I assign and recommend Thursday, the 26th day of November next. ..that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country , and for all the great and various favors which he has been pleased to confer upon us."

ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1861 Farewell words in Springfield, Illinois, on February 11: "Unless the great God who assisted him (Washington) shall be with me and aid me, I must fail; but if the same omniscient mind and mighty arm that directed and protected him shall guide and support me, I shall not fail--I shall succeed. GETTYSBURG ADDRESS 1863 " ...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth. "

U.S. SUPREME COURT 1892 Supreme Court Justice Brewer, delivering the opinion of the Court (143 u.s. 457), stated: "These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations of the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation. "

WOODROW WILSON July 4, 1913 "Here is the nation God has builded by our hands. "

NATIONAL ANTHEM (Adopted by Congress) March 3, 1931 The Star Spangled Banner closes:
"Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto--'In God is our Trust.'"

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE (Words "Under God" adopted by Congress) June 14, 1954 "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, on nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. "
