At the Memorial Day commemoration at the National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, I served as the officer-in-charge, wearing my dress blue uniform. This uniform, as well as those of the other soldiers and veterans reminded us – as did the honor guard firing three rifle volleys and the buglers playing “Taps” – of the selfless individuals that once stood beside us; and as officers, of the men who stood before us, in combat as well as in ceremonies. This uniform not only represents them, but…

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
In centuries past, during a time of war a country could issue a license called a Letter of Marque and Reprisal that allowed privately owned ships to capture vessels of its enemy and keep the results from the sale of the captured ship and its cargo. With this commission, these actions were considered privateering, instead of the free agents of piracy (as in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies). Operating independently of the navy, the…

We weren’t expecting a tornado last week. But when it struck the Adairsville area, even before the call went out for help, the community was already gearing up. On Facebook, churches were organizing and their members getting ready to serve - they didn’t let differences in religion get in the way, with the Church of God, Methodist, Catholic, Baptist and other congregations all coming together and asking: what can we do? They were packed wall to wall, and generously providing food – if…

The number one problem the United States is now facing isn’t the debt. It’s the lack of leadership. This is not news – conservative news-watchers have been telling us for a long time: for 4 years, in fact. We will see how it plays out in the next few weeks, in the President’s inauguration speech on January 21 and the State of the Union address on January 29. But let’s also think about what we want to see.
For those trying to make ends meet, the graphs and charts and speeches of…

Christmas means many things. To me, it means family. For 15 years Sandra and I welcomed over 100 foster and adopted children into our home, and we always tried to make Christmas special for them. They made projects at school – pencil holders, paperweights, and Christmas ornaments that would remind us every year of the efforts they had put into making them. Sandra and I did everything we could to have biggest program, to bring them truckloads of toys. We worked with charities to help not…

There’s a lot to be said about experiences in life. One of the experiences that anyone who’s had an auto accident will recognize: you feel as if the events are happening in slow motion, although you know it’s occurring in real time. But there’s nothing you can do about it. The injury will come. You might be able to adjust yourself from the injury, perhaps adjust the trajectory to limit damage or reduce the liability. But for all intents and purposes, there is little you can do, once you…

The beginning of this Memorial Day weekend will find me at the national cemetery in Canton, just as I have been there in each of the six years since it opened. One of my sons, who will be home on leave from the Navy, will be with me. From the parking area, as you come up to the crest of the hill, there is a stone wall bearing the symbols of all the branches of armed service on it – a wall as solid…

Over 100 years ago, there was a farming community that wanted to build a church. They had a common goal, and everyone was asked to bring stones to the site to build it. Each Sunday they brought stones and piled them up, and when they had enough, construction began. That church still stands today, built with the original stones the church members brought from the fields nearby, with investment of their patience and dedication to reaching the common goal.
As a citizen I look to our…

Today I am announcing that I will run for the new Senate seat for District 52. This new district was created in last year’s redistricting, as a result of increased population in Northwest Georgia. As this region grows, it will need strong conservative leadership and effective decision-making to make the most of these new opportunities. Instead of revisiting what worked for the passing generation, this is a call to leadership for our generation and for our children’s. I want to be that…

What do you say about a Harvard law professor who only knows about the Executive branch of government, uses Executive Orders instead of the Legislative Branch, and decides for himself what’s Constitutional instead the Judicial Branch? It’s down to the GOP finalists-let’s see who has the Constitution & the strength to survive this week “The Hayden Collins Radio Program” Sat noon, Newstalk 1270 WYXC

Good business plans often have a category for contingencies.
Due to our debt crisis, the U.S. has precious little in the way of resources for a contingency. While we are clearly aware that having a $15 trillion deficit is a big problem, we are being directed away from the urgency of our situation and the need to identify how to address it.
The…

What does it take to go against the odds? What kind of risk would you take to defend your family and your country? We have heard many stories about bravery in battle, and those who have protected others during disasters, we applaud the heroes and their achievements – and then check Facebook? What will it take for us today to recognize how threatened is what we believe America stands for, and what are we willing to do about it? Worse than the fluctuations of the worldwide economy is the…

We as citizens of the United States have a responsibility: exercising our right to vote and helping to make a decision that will impact not only you but the entire nation. I have accepted that responsibility – by taking part in early voting – because I know that my vote counts.
If we feel that there’s no leadership we…

This year’s Georgia primary offers big stakes for GOP candidates. Did you hear the President says it’s only fair he gets another term? If the government decided it could cut back on social programs by lowering the birth rate & required all women to use birth control, would that be fair? Or a problem with the First Amendment? Let’s talk about the government’s fair share, Sat noon WYXC Newstalk 1270

One of the critical things when under attack is to know who the enemy is. And is not.
If you listen to many of the national speeches being made about what is imperiling our country, you’ll hear that wealth redistribution – through bigger, stronger government, and through changes in who is taxed and how much – are the necessary counter-attack. It’s implied that the cause of our current crises is social inequality. But it is not.
What threatens us now is the…

There are some things you can prepare for, and some things you can’t. Every year we prepare for hurricanes and storms, and get extra food and extra water. Just before this past New Year’s, Rome, Georgia, took the brunt of a tornado with a lot of trees down, a lot of damage all over the place. But they didn’t have to declare it a disaster area because Rome was a little prepared. They had their CERT teams go out and help assess the damage, they had aerial photographs so they knew the range…
