Senator Maria Cantwell 8-11-09
SH-717 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-4704
Senator Cantwell,
As you are aware, last month the Thune Gun Amendment in Defense Reciprocity Authorization was brought before you for a vote. This would allow concealed carry license holders to carry a weapon from state to state for the sake of the defense of self, family, or others. As you should be aware, the process in obtaining such a license includes an in depth back ground check through local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and have strict guidelines & rules that must be satisfied prior to a weapons license being issued. This is why obtaining such a license is so expensive. This process assures a concealed weapons license is not issued to people who posses criminal convictions and / or have been engaged in criminal activity.
As you should be aware, reciprocity for concealed carry license holders is a reasonable expectation to any reasonable American as the mandatory criminal back ground check is comprehensive, particularly when compared to a driver’s license for example. Interestingly, a driver’s license is a privilege awarded by the state, where as the right to bear arms for defense or any other reason is an absolute American right as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was recently up held by the United States Supreme Court (reference the Hellar Vs. Washington D.C.).
Incredibly, you voted “NO”! Senator you voted against every American’s constitutional liberties, freedoms, and rights as related to the right to bear arms. You’re considering every American’s constitutional right to bear arms as a privilege like that of a driver’s license, rather then the Constitutional American right that it is. You voted against the right of self defense, which is a fundamental human right to everybody on the earth.
Your position and subsequent vote on this amendment is fundamentally Un-American, which is simply unacceptable for any Senator. Your actions criminalize and punish the honest & hard working American, while rendering aid to the lawless and illegal aliens.
As your constituent, I expect an explanation for your actions in the form of a letter or a phone call.
Sincerely,
Merrill Berger
