Hartford Officer Recovering After Stabbing; Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder.
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin provides an update on a critically injured Hartford police officer.
A veteran city police officer was severely wounded Thursday when authorities said she was stabbed in the neck during a struggle with a woman involved in a dispute with her landlord of a downtown apartment building. Maintenance workers jumped in to the bloody fight and helped disarm the woman as police whisked the officer to the hospital within minutes of the incident.
By Thursday night, the officer – who police did not identify – was in the intensive care unit after undergoing several hours of surgery.
Chevoughn Augustin, 39, was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, assault on a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief, and was expected to appear Friday morning in Superior Court in Hartford.
At 9:48 a.m., two officers were dispatched to Apt. 903 of the Spectra Boutique Apartments, 5 Constitution Plaza, following a call to police about a tenant-landlord dispute, police said. Police Chief David Rosado said there were “no indications of any weapons” in the initial police call.
“There were two officers dispatched to the dispute and there were other cars rolling that way. She just happened to be the first one on scene. Remember, it’s a landlord-tenant dispute, no indications of any weapons so protocol was followed but we’ll look into that,” Rosario said. “There were multiple cars going, she just happened to be the first one there.”
The officer tried to talk Chevoughn Augustin out of the apartment. And then the situation escalated.
“Unfortunately, a struggle ensued,” Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said. He said Augustin knocked the officer to the ground, put her in a chokehold and stabbed her in the neck with a ceramic knife.
He said the officer was stabbed in the jugular vein and trachea.
Maintenance workers managed to pull the woman off the officer.
Another officer inside the apartment, a trained emergency medical technician, aided the wounded officer as she was rushed to an ambulance.
Dr. Kenneth Robinson of Hartford Hospital, thanked medics and police for getting the officer to the hospital so quickly. The police shut down city streets to do.
Hartford Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center that can mobilize a team of surgeons “at a moment’s notice,” Robinson said in a press conference. The officer was taken immediately to the operating room for surgery. By 6:30 p.m., physicians said the officer was out of surgery.
Housing court records show Augustin had been evicted because of numerous complaints about "disturbing" behavior but was waging a legal fight to remain in her ninth-floor apartment.
Augustin was supposed to leave her apartment by April 24, but went to housing court in Hartford and filed a counter motion claiming she was being discriminated against because she is a Native American.
Augustin has lived in apartment 903 since December 2017, records show.
Attorneys for landlord SPC Master Tenant LLC alleged that Augustin “created numerous disturbances” for her neighbors that affected “their peaceful enjoyment of the premises” and rose to the level of an eviction.
Those disturbances included wandering the hallways "aimlessly very late at night," sleeping in the common room couch, confronting other residents in a "hostile" way and ordering food to be delivered and then not going down to pick it up, leaving the delivery person at the door or others in the building to deal with it.
The complaint also said she refused to meet with management to discuss her behavior and routinely accused staff of stealing her food.
“The allegations cannot be substantiated. I am a long-standing member of this community,” Augustin wrote in her counter-complaint. “I have excellent personal and professional references. I would not want to throw those references away for the sake of losing housing.” Augustin said she is “facing fair housing discrimination for being a member of a several protected classes including being a Native American and being single.”
Robert Chesson, a lawyer for the building owner, declined to comment on the eviction case. A trial is scheduled for June 4 in housing court.
Augustin graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1997 and was heavily involved in school activities from debates to youth programs. She was a youth counselor at the Community Action Against Substance Abuse, or CAASA, a program that trains youths to teach other youths about substance abuse prevention. She also received the first ever Spirit Award by Citizens of Connecticut's Children and Youth Inc. in 1997 for her research on teen sexual behaviors and attitudes.
Throughout Thursday at Hartford Hospital, local and state police streamed into the building. Multiple police cars and motorcycles were parked at the entrance.
Officers waited outside talking in clusters and hugging. Many went into the hospital. The officer’s family members were escorted by Connecticut and Massachusetts State Police to the hospital. An escort with lights and sirens came down Hudson Street before arriving at Hartford Hospital’s main entrance, which had been cleared for their arrival.
Rosado said the officer has been on the force for 12 years.
“She’s very well-respected. She’s a great officer,” he said. “We pray for her recovery.”
Foley said the officer is trained in crisis intervention, “for this exact kind of situation.” Sgt. John Szewczyk, president of the Hartford police union, said the officer is a well-regarded, hardworking member of the force.
“She’s a good officer,” Szewczyk said. “She’s very well-liked and extremely respected in the community.
“This goes to show the dangers of policing every day even on what many would think is a routine call. Every situation can turn dangerous.”
Other police departments and politicians offered support.
“Our prayers are with the HPD officer who was injured in the line of duty this morning,” Gov. Dannel P. Malloy tweeted. “We are sending our best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.”
“It’s a difficult day for Hartford Police and we’re in recovery mode,” Rosado said.
Police publicly thanked the maintenance workers and credited them with saving the officer’s life.
“To see a member of our community assist another officer means a lot to us,” Rosado said. “It’s a family taking care of a family. We’ll get through it by leaning on one another… this was a very violent incident.”
Foley called the maintenance workers “heroic,” adding, “I don’t say that lightly.”
“Their extraordinary and heroic work is the reason she is alive, and on behalf of the City of Hartford I want to express our deep appreciation to each and every one of them,” Mayor Luke Bronin said in a statement.
Traffic around the hospital, particularly the patient drop-off and pickup areas, moved slowly and the scene of the stabbing was locked down.
The Spectra Boutique Apartments opened in 2015 after a $24 million conversion of the long-vacant Sonesta Hotel. The project, partly financed with public funding, added 190 apartments to the downtown area, part of a push to add rentals to the center of the city. The apartments are nearly fully occupied, according the latest figures from the Capital Region Development Authority.
The owners, Jeff Ravetz and Joseph Klaynberg, praised the efforts by staff who helped the officer.
“Our heartfelt wishes and prayers are with the police officer and her family at this time. We wish her a speedy and full recovery. We are also very proud of our staff who, at great risk to themselves, interceded and ended this awful attack,” they said in a statement. “The safety and security of our tenants remains our top priority. We are working with the local authorities to assist in the investigation in any way that we can."

Liberal Congresswoman Makes Insane Claim About The NRA.
05/16/2018 Daily Wire by: Emily Zanotti
Even though the tactic doesn't seem to be working for Democrats, Senator [SIC] debbie wasserman schultz today doubled down on earlier rhetoric calling the National Rifle Association "just shy" of a terrorist organization.
According to her recent interview with the Huffington Post, wasserman schultz is no fan of the gun rights organization, and she's not afraid to show it.
“The NRA is kind of just shy of a terrorist organization,” schultz told the magazine. “They have done everything they can to perpetuate the culture of violence that we have in our country with the spread of assault weapons across the nation."
She then attacked recently-appointed NRA President Oliver North's recent comments that gun rights are facing the strongest opposition to a civil right since the Jim Crow era by suggesting the NRA is actually responsible for mass murder.

IG Report on Handling of clinton Investigation Finished, Release Imminent.
5/17/18 by Bonchie
Things are about to get really complicated for some former FBI and DOJ officials over the coming weeks.
There have been hints of how serious Inspector General Michael Horowitz is from his damning summary of former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe’s misdeeds at the FBI. I don’t expect him to hold back here as he lays out the FBI/DOJ handling of the killary clinton email scandal in a much anticipated IG report on the matter.
Per the Washington Post, his work is finished and is in the final draft stages.
The Justice Department inspector general has completed a draft of its report criticizing law enforcement’s handling of the killary clinton email probe, and current and former officials will begin reviewing the findings this week and lobbying for changes before the report probably becomes public next month, people familiar with the matter said.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz notified lawmakers in a Wednesday letter that the draft report was complete and being made available to the agencies and individuals examined in the probe.
While it probably won’t be officially released until next month, you can expect leaks of what’s in it to begin over the next week.
Media reports are assuming that Horowitz will go hard after James Comey for his handling of the investigation and his decision to elevate himself well outside the scope of his former position’s power.
The report will also likely address Andrew McCabe again, who despite having clear conflicts of interest, chose to not recuse himself until the investigation was all but over.
Whether Horowitz has also found improper behavior within the DOJ to report isn’t known yet, but it’s a good bet he has. If I were speculating, he’ll likely address loretta lynch’s tarmac meeting with slick willy.
The DOJ may also come under fire due to recent reports that they pressured the FBI to back off the clinton Foundation.
The most open question I have is if the IG will also criticize the illogical immunity deals given to protect killary clinton’s associates and the kid gloves with which she was treated in her FBI interview. Will he pass judgement on the case itself and speak to a wider conspiracy to protect k. clinton or just individually criticize actions outside of protocol?
We’ll have to wait and see.
Of course, the Washington Post is worried about what really matters.
It also will probably take aim at others at the FBI and Justice Department, and provide President Trump, a frequent vocal critic of the department and comey in particular, political ammunition to press his case that law enforcement has been out to get him.
We certainly can’t have that.
Sarah Sanders Demolishes Reporter Who Tries to Push Trump’s MS-13 Comments as Racist.
5/17/18 by Brandon Morse
I’m consistently amazed that the media tries to run with already disproved narratives, but watching Press Secretary Sarah Sanders run them down like a wounded gazelle when they pop their head up is very entertaining.
Sanders was asked about President Donald Trump’s comments earlier today by a reporter who, like many in the mainstream, purposefully attempted to take his description of the violent MS-13 gang as “animals” to mean all immigrants. Sanders responded by bringing a verbal gun to a knife fight.
“If the media and liberals want to defend MS-13, they’re more than welcome to. Frankly, I don’t think the term that the president used was strong enough!,” she said. Sanders highlighted how MS-13 is known for their brutal murders, including one instance where a man was stabbed 100 times, decapitated, and had his heart ripped out. She also spoke on the drugging and raping of a 14 year old girl that MS-13 was responsible for. ""If the media and liberals want to defend MS-13, they're more than welcome to. Frankly, I don't think the term POTUS used was strong enough, It took an animal to stab a man 100 times and decapitate him and rip his heart out."
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DdaqjcMW4AMNszi?
MS-13 is one of the most violent gangs in America. Their motto is quite literally, “kill, rape, control,” and they do this to great effect.
They are responsible for throwing many women into sex slavery, and illegal drug distribution on top of their murders. As I wrote earlier today, calling them “animals” doesn’t remotely go far enough in describing the nightmarish situations this gang has put people in.
It’s time the media and the left began to lower their level of hatred for Trump. Being against a gang such as MS-13 is something that everyone should be on board with.
This gang is not a political game.
People are being raped and murdered, and the biased media want to somehow trip up Trump via public opinion to score points against him, the victims be damned.
Calling MS-13 "Animals" Is Putting It Lightly, and the Media's Disgusting Defense of Them Is Just Plain Evil.
5/17/18 by Brandon Morse
It’s days like today when I’m reminded that we don’t live in a world of basically grey areas, and there are really black and white differences between what is good and what is bad.
The media’s pearl-clutching over President Donald Trump ripping MS-13 is one such moment. Clearly, there is nothing to defend about MS-13, and yet the media seems aghast that Trump would insult them.
Yesterday, Trump called MS-13 gang members “animals,” and for good reason! This a vicious, bloody gang that kills brutally, and rapes as it’s part of their motto, because it is. Their motto is literally “rape, control, kill.” They’re known for their drug smuggling, sex trafficking, and brutal murders, including one man whom they stabbed 100 times, decapitated, and ripped out his heart.
To say they’re animals is putting it lightly!
These are sick barbarians who should be systematically swept from the streets, the worst members made an example of, and be marked as a mistake our nation should have solved sooner in the history books.
But the media believes them worth protecting, so long as they can stick it to Trump.
Here’s the full context of Trump’s comments on MS-13.
https://pbs.twimg.com/ext_tw_video_thumb/997105846843666436/pu/img/...
Clearly, Trump is referring to the gang, but the media is purposefully misrepresenting Trump’s comments in order to make it seem like he’s commenting on all immigrants.
As Joe Cunningham highlighted earlier today, everyone from the New York Times, CNN, and the Washington Post went nuts over Trump once again allegedly showing his racist side.
But as we can see above, the full video is there. He clearly wasn’t speaking about immigrants in general, just MS-13.
This is one of the bloodiest gangs in America, and yet the media is attempting to represent them as just another group of immigrants that must be protected from Trump’s hatred.
Why?
The media exhibited similar behavior as I covered just yesterday when they decided to represent the Hamas terrorists attacking Israel as peaceful Palestinian protesters. Even the politicians got into the act with Bernie Sanders getting into the game by comparing the Trump family’s celebration of the opening of the Jerusalem embassy to the pain and suffering of these alleged innocent Palestinians.
The proof that these were Hamas terrorists that were being killed by Israeli’s was all over the internet. Even Hamas itself was telling any media outlet that would listen that these were their “martyrs.” Pictures and video of the rioters throwing Molotov cocktails and firebomb kites were circulating around social media like wildfire. Yet, the media continued to blatantly lie as if the truth wasn’t out there for the viewing.
Why?
The media’s literal obsession with doing whatever it takes to make life hard for Trump is moving into levels that are nothing short of dangerous. Their defense of Hamas is only going to embolden terrorism, as the terrorist group will come to believe they have the support of the west. Worse still, their running defense for MS-13 will only proceed to trip up solutions to solving the severe problems that the gang brings to this country.
Americans will die, women and girls will be raped and sold into sex slavery, and our drug problem will only grow!
The media does not seem to care about these consequences.
They only seem to care about bringing down the current Republican in office.
This is beyond sick. This is just evil.
President Trump to North Korea: -- There Are Two Libyan Models for Denuclearization Available, Pick One!
5/17/18 by streiff
After a months long honeymoon in which North Korea was on its best behavior, it is going back to the pattern it likes best. Conflict.
Two days ago, shortly after the North Koreans announced they would allow foreign media into the DPRK to witness the destruction of their nuclear test site, the North Korean news agency said the United States needed to mind its manners or the meeting between Kim Jong Un and President Trump was off. At the same time, it abruptly cancelled a high level meeting scheduled with South Korea for yesterday.
Today, the North Koreans were bitching about a military exercise that just a couple of weeks ago they were fine with.
This afternoon, President Trump sent a stark message.
“The Libya model isn’t the model that we have at all when we’re thinking of North Korea,” Trump said. “In Libya, we decimated that country!”
By contrast, Trump added, a deal with North Korea “would be with Kim Jong Un, something where he’d be there, he’d be in his country, he’d be running his country, his country would be very rich, his country would be very industrious.”
“Nothing has changed on North Korea that we know of,” the president said. “We have not been told anything.”
White House aides rejected suggestions from reporters that Kim is in the driver’s seat. Sanders emphasized that it was Kim who extended an invitation to Trump for a meeting, which the president accepted in March. She added that if North Korea cancels the summit, the administration will continue with its “maximum pressure” policy that has relied on economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation of Pyongyang! *** THE PRESIDENT HAS HIM BY THE YING YANG! ****
But analysts have said that the policy is faltering amid Kim’s diplomatic outreach to South Korea and China. South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who met with Kim last month in the demilitarized zone dividing the countries, is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
“If the meeting happens, it happens,” Trump said of his summit with Kim. “If it doesn’t, we’ll go on to the next step.”
https://twitter.com/julianborger/status/997183387017375744
The Vichy lobby went batshit crazy. It was glorious.
Kim is not in the position to make demands. He’s in the position of trying to survive. He is not playing multi-dimensional chess–sorry, not all Asian leaders are super-villains, I know that is a shock–he is trying to get out from under a sanctions regime that is increasingly effective. Kim needs the deal because if he walks away from the deal, sanctions are just going to get tighter. But to get a deal and survive he has to look to the ruling clique in North Korea like he is calling the shots, not like an errand boy.
And I think there is a lot of truth here, though I think it matters less what Kim thinks about it than what Trump and Bolton and Pompeo think about it.
Via Politico:
The meeting was set for June 12 in Singapore, but on Wednesday, Kim Kye Gwan, North Korea’s first vice foreign minister, issued a statement through the state-run Central News Agency criticizing White House national security adviser John Bolton.
He said Trump “will be recorded as more tragic and unsuccessful president than his predecessors, far from his initial ambition to make unprecedented success” if his diplomacy toward Kim mirrors that of previous commanders in chief.
Earlier on Wednesday, Seoul-based media outlet Yonhap News Agency reported the North had abruptly canceled a high-level meeting with South Korea and was considering withdrawing from Kim’s summit with Trump because of ongoing military exercises.
“The president is prepared and will be ready to meet, and we’re continuing to move forward with the preparations at this point. And if the North Koreans want to meet, we’ll be there,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday.
“The president, as we’ve said all along, will be prepared and ready to meet, and there’s really not a lot to add beyond that point,” Sanders said. “We’re continuing in the maximum pressure campaign, but again, nothing has changed on our end. This was an invitation that North Korea offered and that we’ve accepted, and we’re continuing to move forward in those preparations.”
What you’re seeing here is not hard to understand. This isn’t top level strategy. This is Negotiations 101. Trump has made it clear from the first signs of a thaw with North Korea that he was willing to walk away if he didn’t get what he perceives as a good deal. And he can. If there is no deal then we are back to where we were with no lost ground. If he makes a bad deal he will be crucified by everyone. And a bad deal will be anything that looks, smells, or tastes like the Iran deal.
Trump also knows that he can’t go into the talks looking week. South Korea’s Moon is so invested in a deal, any deal, that he will give away anything to make it happen. That’s why he’s becoming Kim’s bitch.
The North Koreans talked smack and now Trump is just returning the favor.
The bottom line is that he knows, from experience, that you never go into any negotiation unless you are willing to walk away. If he allowed the North Koreans to look like they are in charge, then they have no reason to make any concessions.

Having served in that tumultuous time, I can offer you my personal commitment, clearly and without reservation, that under my leadership CIA will not restart such a detention and interrogation program." 'Good Man With a Gun:' Illinois School Shooting Thwarted by Armed Guard.
5/17/18 Guy Benson
After the horrific Parkland massacre, a number of anti-gun activists attempted to point to the disgraceful inaction of the school's armed officer as meaningful evidence that the pro-gun rights side's "good guy with a gun" argument was invalid. This feeble counterpoint flies in the face not only of common sense -- of course an active shooter is more likely to be stopped by someone else with a firearm than by defenseless, unarmed targets -- but also of real-life examples and data. In recent months, we've told you about the good guys with guns that put a stop to the Texas church killer's rampage, a Maryland school shooting, and a Waffle House stick-up in Louisiana.
Now, an untold number of high school students in Illinois owe another armed security officer a deep debt of gratitude. The man quickly identified a threat, raced to confront it, put down the assailant with his own weapon, and is rightly being credited with saving "countless" lives:
An Illinois school resource officer stopped an armed teenager at a high school Wednesday morning, according to the local police chief, who applauded the officer for saving "countless" lives.
When the 19-year-old suspect fired several shots near a gym at Dixon High School, the school resource officer reported the incident to authorities and then confronted the gunman, Dixon police chief Steven Howell said at a news conference.
When confronted, the suspect -- a former student at Dixon High School -- started running away, and the officer pursued him, Howell said. The suspect shot several rounds at the officer, and the officer then returned fire, hitting the gunman, the chief added...The suspect was taken into custody with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, police said...No students or staff were injured.
CBS News covered the story last night:

The would-be killer is a former student whose name we will not publish.
Illinois' governor was among the many officials to hail Dallas as a hero:
Today, we should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a dangerous situation at Dixon High School. Governor Rauner
This incident was undoubtedly terrifying for the at-risk students, and once against raises the sickening prospect of a young person using a gun to inflict maximum damage on innocent victims. We don't yet have details on what sort of weapon was used by the shooter, or how it was obtained. But regardless of one's views of the Second Amendment or "gun culture," it is absolutely clear that somebody with a gun nipped a potential tragedy in the bud by engaging the criminal and returning fire; this episode is among the many defensive gun uses in America each year. In short, a 'good man with a gun' was able to prevent something awful from happening because he was in the right place at the right time with the right training and the right tool.
Ed Morrissey weighs in on lessons learned:
Everything went right in this case, when a whole lot of things could have gone wrong. That’s clearly true, but first one thing has to happen before anything can go right — the shooter has to be confronted with deadly force. Mass shooters don’t pick schools as targets because they want to engage in an equal fight; they choose schools because they believe them to be soft targets without the ability to engage in return. They want easy targets, not a gun battle, because they are cowards. With this as the key of any defense of any perceived soft targets, it’s clear why having armed and trained personnel on hand makes more sense than declaring areas “gun-free zones” and forbidding it.
I'll leave you with an outrageous nit of info regarding the aforementioned disgraced Parkland officer:
Scott Peterson, the 55-year-old Broward County sheriff's deputy who failed to engage the Parkland High School shooter, is set to receive a 'taxpayer-funded' pension of $104,000 every year for the rest of his life!
The Sun Sentinel obtained records from the Florida Department of Management Services showing that Peterson, who retired in the weeks after the March shooting, is due to collect $8,700 per month. That works out to slightly more than $104,000 a year. Peterson, who is 55 years old, will be able to receive that pension for the rest of his life, and Broward County taxpayers will cover 50 percent of his health insurance premiums...The generous benefits package is premised on the idea that Peterson put his life on the line in a high-risk profession.
Except, of course, that Peterson DID NOT put his life on the line when the moment arose! But the payouts are virtually guaranteed, regardless of performance in the line of duty. Under Florida law, public pensions can be revoked for felony offenses that "breach the public trust." While Peterson's actions in March may fit the spirit of that law, the letter of the law identifies only a few specific crimes—embezzlement, theft, bribery, and child sexual assault—for which pensions can be revoked.
If this story makes your blood boil, imagine being a parent of one of the murdered kids:

Hero Illinois Officer Showed The Right Way To Handle A School Shooting!
5/16/18 Daily Caller by: Anders Hagstrom
Mark Dallas, a school resource officer, exchanged shots with and disarmed a student who brought a gun to school in Illinois Wednesday morning.
The alleged suspect, Matt Milby, 19, arrived armed at Dixon High School around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. When he got there, Milby fired shots at the resource officer on duty, hitting him.
The officer was able to fire back at the alleged shooter, hitting him, according to Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss.
What happened in Illinois should have transpired in Parkland in February, but the on-site officer acted with cowardice and didn’t enter the building.
But Dallas’ success is, unfortunately, the exception — not the rule.
Both the FBI and Broward County Police knew the Parkland shooter was violent and mentally unstable. He was kicked out of school and reported to police dozens of times, but still allowed to buy an AR-15.
Perhaps lawmakers should focus on fixing these issues before restricting gun access for law-abiding citizens.
