‘Misguided missile’: A GOP strategist’s private advice on a Trump nomination

Donald Trump has become such a force in the Republican Party that the official overseeing next year’s Senate races has proposed a delicate strategy for GOP candidates: Tap into Trumpism without mimicking Trump.

In a seven-page confidential memo that imagines Trump as the party’s presidential nominee, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee urges candidates to adopt many of Trump’s tactics, issues and approaches — right down to adjusting the way they dress and how they use Twitter.

In the memo on “the Trump phenomenon,” NRSC Executive Director Ward Baker said Republicans should embrace Trump’s tough talk about China and “grab onto the best elements of [his] anti-Washington populist agenda.” Above all, they should appeal to voters as genuine and beyond the influence of special interests.

“Trump has risen because voters see him as authentic, independent, direct, firm, — and believe he can’t be bought,” Baker writes. “These are the same character traits our candidates should be advancing in 2016. That’s Trump lesson #1.”

Baker’s memo, titled “Observations on Donald Trump and 2016,” amounts to a clear-eyed approach to the Trump challenge, to which many Republican elites have responded with only hand-wringing and the vague hope that somehow, someday it will disappear. In fact, the memo posits that Trump could build a powerful enough coalition to win the general election. Regardless of how far Trump’s candidacy ultimately goes, the memo is evidence of the effect he has had on his party.

The GOP sure needs new leadership. Trump may be loud, and disruptive at times, but he is speaking out on what a lot of Americans believe. I like what he says, but am concerned about the office of President.

Would I like to see a soft-spoken, calm person in that office - no way.  But do we need someone as volatile as Trump? Right now, perhaps so. However, still waiting on the sidelines for the one best candidate to establish their run.  Don't want another Romney - liked him, but he was not the one.

And - it appears we are heading in the right direction - current GOP Congressmen are starting to get the message - they are retiring. Perhaps we have a chance to get Term Limits for all. One way or another!!

If we can take down McCain in the primaries it will show the elite in Washington their days are numbered. I look forward to the day it happens.

Agree ..DV,,Can't be soon enough for me...

DV. If I am confident that we will retain the Senate Majority. I may even donate to the Democratic choice in the Arizona election...I could really see me sending a check... But I would really need to be confident to do it...PS. I do not think I would mind if Paul Ryan lost his re-election either.

Yes, Ryan and by the way, why the beard? Trying to be showing your support for the wrong group, pr just lazy since you have so much more to do. I can't vote against Ryan, but sure will push against him anyway. I know which papers are in his area, and I have a niece that can vote against him.

Yea, I noticed the scruffy look he was sporting. Maybe he thinks it will tuffin up his looks so he could intimidate. His blasting Trump speech was a failed attempt to sound like he was in charge. I think the position might be going to his head. Eggo`s can be a dangerous thing, if it is not tempered.

Trump to bypass RNC event

He had been slated to attend a fundraiser Wednesday.

Donald Trump will not be attending an RNC fundraising event this week after all.

Trump’s campaign had said in October that it would be attending Wednesday’s Presidential Trust Dinner, to be held in New York City. But on Monday, three sources familiar with the planning of the event said that neither Trump, nor any other presidential candidate, would be attending the event.

Story Continued Below

Neither Trump, nor the Republican National Committee, is explaining the reason for the change in plans: spokespersons for Trump and the RNC did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier this year the committee began reaching out to Republican candidates to gauge their interest in attending the dinner, which is one of the RNC’s big fundraising draws of the year.

At one point, the committee circulated a draft invitation that included the names of such big Republican Party donors as hedge fund manager Paul Singer, wrestling executive Linda McMahon and investor Ken Griffin.

It seems if Trump's not going no one will, how is the RNC going to raise money? Personaly I give to candidates I want to support not the RINO party elite.

I do the same thing. The RNC got their last dime from me about 2009. When they had their fire Nancey Polosi Drive.

I'm with both of you, only support the individual candidate, never support the party. I'm still Reform/Party, though I have been submitting some money certain Tea Party requests.
